Moto X (2014)

And how do you handle customs? Do they include it in the price?

They do. I shipped a few items with them, and all they do is notify you once all your parcels for the specific order have been obtained and that they have been shipped, and once in the country, their courier contacts you to arrange delivery. No customs fees or any of that crap DHL and the like pull.

Sounds good, I might use them to bring in a beastly Sager laptop then, I'm sick of Asus and their BS excuses.

So apparently cellphones has a 14% VAT and 14% customs added when you import. I did a quick check, when using moto maker and choosing the 32 GB with Bamboo, and using MyUS, it should be around R8800 (incl VAT and customs).

I don't know if there is anything I missed in my calcs...

Ouch. Why not use Postbox Courier?

14% customs? VAT is paid at customs.. aren't you double adding? Or if you mean duties, there are no duties on cellphones and most electronics (except TV's I think)

They would still need to pay the VAT...

Well, I've done a very basic quote with both Motorola for a Pure Edition 32GB with a teak finish, and shipping with Postbox Courier (in which I overestimated the size of the package just to be sure), converted it to rands, and it works out to R7961.50. For the money that AntennaMan is being charged, you could get the phone plus a decent cover and screen protector from Amazon to boot.

But his calulations are off.. He added 14% twice

About adding 14% twice, I saw something like that in the OnePlus One thread. I tried searching for the duties on the SARS website, but couldn't find anything conclusive. I also just did a quick calculation with MyUS pricing as they are the only guys I know of. Of course there might be others that are cheaper.

How do you select the Pure Edition on the Moto website?

Nah phones are duty free, you only pay VAT on them. But, VAT is calculated on 110% of the value.

How do you select the Pure Edition on the Moto website?

After you customise it in Moto Maker, you select Buy, then the unlocked option, then the Pure Edition becomes available. No need to choose a carrier. You select that, then hit Submit, then Add to Cart. Done.

Ok, so Motorola has a Cyber Monday deal where they offer $140 off the 16GB model. All you have to do is register on the Moto Maker site starting at 7pm our time tonight. You can also get 30% off of accessories. I am going to see what this is going to cost. Probably going to be cheaper than through Orange.

Just make sure it's not subject to a contract with an American network. Or "carrier" as they call them.

16GB? Hmmm, that's a bit small IMO.

No it is not. The version locked to Verizon costs $0.01 on contract, and the unlocked Pure Edition is $140 off regular price.

I have a 32 GB Galaxy S3 and have never used more than half of the available memory. I don't store loads of music on the device and I frequently do backups. Maybe with the money I save I can take out a Dropbox or Google Drive subscription in the future.

Cool, then let us know how it goes.

Will do. First need to see if I am lucky enough to get one of the promo codes. I've already signed up with Postbox-Courier as well.
Google Drive has 15GB free storage and OneDrive also 15GB free. That should cover me for any additional storage I need for photo's etc.

I'm actually quite excited about this phone.
