Van der Mark in for Rossi at Aragon

Dutch Superbike rider Michael van der Mark will stand in for injured star Valentino Rossi at the Aragon MotoGP later this month, Yamaha announced on Monday.

Nine-time world champion Rossi is recovering from a broken leg sustained in a training accident last month.

The 38-year-old missed Sunday's race in San Marino, and will be absent again in Aragon on 24 September with a forecast return to action in Japan in October.

Van der Mark, who has experience in the former 125cc class and in Moto2, will be making his MotoGP debut without any prior testing.

"I’ve never ridden a MotoGP bike before, so this will be a completely new experience for me," the 24-year-old said in a statement released by Yamaha.

Yamaha Motor Racing managing director Lin Jarvis commented: "It is never easy to step in to replace another rider and even more difficult to replace Valentino Rossi.

"But we believe that Michael has all the credentials and experience to do a good job."

He teams up with Yamaha's Maverick Vinales, third in the championship standings after a fourth place finish to Marc Marquez in San Marino.

Jarvis added: "We also hope that Valentino will continue to make a rapid recovery and that we will see him again, back on his YZR-M1, on the earliest possible occasion."

Van der Mark is due to become the first Dutch MotoGP rider since Jurgen van den Goorbergh in 2005.

Hmm, interesting call. If you're going to have a second rider in the race (from a constructors points perspective I guess) then why not have someone with experience? Surely Yamaha have development or test riders? Someone who knows the bike? And if you're not interested in constructors points, then why even have a second rider in the first place? Still, good luck to him. I'll be surprised if he finishes in the points...
 
Rossi back on bike 18 days after leg break

Nine-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi returned to action on Monday, just 18 days after suffering a double leg fracture.

The 38-year old is set to decide on Wednesday whether he will take part at this weekend’s Aragon Grand Prix in Spain.

The Italian is currently fourth in the MotoGP standings, 42 points behind leader Marc Marquez with five races left.

Rossi’s Movistar Yamaha team said on Monday that ‘the Doctor’ had managed to complete several laps at Misano before the session was cut short by rain.

His father Graziano was quoted by Motorsport.com as saying Rossi had felt some discomfort.

"I was told he felt a lot of pain in his right leg, but he could not determine in so few laps whether a return at Aragon could be possible," he said.

Rossi had an operation on his right leg after damaging it in a training accident on August 31.

A statement from the Italian’s Movistar Yamaha team said: "As today's riding session was cut short due to the change in weather, the evaluation of Rossi's physical condition was inconclusive.

"He will decide by the end of Wednesday, 20 September, whether he will attempt to take part in this weekend's Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon."

Yamaha team boss Lin Jarvis said last week that he doubted Rossi would race in Spain unless he felt he could be finish in the top five or six positions.

^^Yeah I read that. I'd be surprised if he made it but Rossi, being the consummate pro he is, would probably jump at the chance to get back on the bike if it presented itself.
 
VR46 on third. Astonishing.
Maverick on pole, Jorge on second and Marc crashed...
 
KTM and Mika did well too. I don't think Smith will be with KTM much longer.

Johan Zarco on pole?! Well I never. Crucially for Marquez though (who lines up third), Dovi is only 9th and Vinales down in 14th.
