On Friday morning a taxi rear ended my car while in peak traffic on the N1 north before allandale off ramp around 08h15.

I reported the accident. Got an AR number. Also reported to my insurance company. I'm going to let my insurance company sort this out. But it means I got a hefty excess to pay.

JMPD managed to get details of taxi driver. But, he was being very evasive. I took a photo of the vehicle Licence disk and number plate.

How will the insurance company deal with the taxi driver or owner of taxi ?
Do I need to contact the taxi driver / owner?
Will I ever get my excess back?

Your insurance will handle everything.
Some taxi's have insurance and if so you might get your excess back. If not insured I doubt it.
Effectively you are not allowed to contact the taxi driver/owner because your policy subrogation clause only allows you to do this once your insurer's say you can.

Had a similar issue your insurance company will do the work for you and trace and recover your excess and you should be refunded. Well I am with Hollard :)

Had a accident before with a taxi,
Most don't have insurance and no licence for the driver....
(Western concept)

Sad news, but wait and see, and be ready for a excess.....
It's really nasty, and not nice news,

Don't expect to get excess back .. Sadly that's life. Most taxi people are hard to trace and the driver will disappear or claim ignorance. The owner will say he can't be held liable, no one is injured and bull bar didn't damage his vehicle so tough.

I've been driven into by a taxi in 2012, that's what happen albeit I have pictures of taxi, driver, etc.

If you worry about excesses (you won't get excess back if car is stolen for example), then try to get a insurance cover that (or at least insurance where certain events) doesn't require excess. It will cost more per month though.

What irritates me is that the taxi was barely damaged. It's probably still on the road.
The driver didn't give a damn. The owner will walk away without any recourse.

And the inconvenience of this entire incident is squarely on me.

most likely, if rear-ended and the chassis is bent...

Bent chassis is hardly a write -off case. They have chassis straightening machines.

General damage greater than 50-75% of market value. And you will only get a new car if the car is less than a year old.

Just for interest (if any)

This occurred in bumper to bumper traffic. I was crawling in 2nd gear.
No matter what car I am driving, I always maintain 2 to 3 car lengths distance.

A second before the collision, I looked in rear view mirror. Just saw these lights and entire mirror was white in colour. Then bang.
When I realized what had happened, I was lying flat and looking at inside of ceiling. The back support of the seat was fully reclined.

Cr@p sorry dude.

They will repair. But that is an old car. They may use 2nd hand parts.

Also I highly recommend you go see a doctor. You may have whiplash. It takes away to show up. And you will need doctors confirmation if you need treatment later.

GOOD job on keeping the 2-3 car lengths in front of you. Saved the car, And you further damage.

Hope it gets sorted quickly.

@OP, my Honest opinion
not so bad , accident didnt even crack the back window,

my advice, get another bumper, paint it, fit it and continue on your way......

you drive a tazz, probably the single toughest passenger car sold in SA.

yes excess and so on, but its not a write off, its fixable quite easily and nobody will notice anything...

had a similar accident with a z4 while I was driving a sentra, same exact spot,
changed bumper, repaint, and you on your way,

dont build things like they used to.....

as for the taxi Professor... not much you can do, they not licenced/insured or care much.....
if you had the money, you could try small claim court, but honestly not worth it....

this is why nowdays, after my car was written off by a taxi genius,
I learn to stay as far away as possible from those death traps, rather have one in front of me than behind.....

Just brought the car into panel shop for assessment.

They going to strip and evaluate. Assessor said, it may result in a write-off. But they need a full quote.
I have already made up my mind to find a safer car. My family is all over my case because I'm driving an "unsafe" vehicle.
If they write off, I will use the money as deposit on next car.
If no write off , it will get repaired and put up immediately for sale (with full disclosure to potential buyers)

Will keep posting updates on how this unfolds. Maybe this experience will help someone else out in future.
