Hey guys,

I'm getting a 150cc bike on Friday, I have my car learners license and I'm over 18. My bike learners expired in 2008. So these are my questions:

1.What will I be fined for riding the bike without a Motorcycle learners license?(

AND

2.Would it make my situation any better if I have my Car learners license with me?

3. What is the minimum engine size to ride on Highways?

Here's some advice, get your motorcycle learners again, then book and do your motorcycle license, then you wont have to worry about anything.
If you catch the wrong(or right?) cop on a bad day and he decides to impound your bike and take you to a holding cell, well thats just not going to be any fun for anyone, never mind the fine cost.
So do yourself a favor and just do the license stuff ;)

1. R1250 for riding without a license.
2. No, doesn't help a thing.
3. 50cc

Just go for the learner's. They are valid for 2 years now.

on number 3 its actually 51cc (really above 50cc) since a 50 cc bike would technically only have 49 ccs

Yup, you gotta have an engine above 50cc to ride on the highway. Sorry, should have specified >50cc, not just 50cc.
Used to be... err... 80? I think? Or something like that. Came down a few years ago.

Whether you can reach the minimum speed on the highway though is another story.
If your little 51cc lawnmower can go at least the minimum speed (60? 40?) then you're in the clear.

I was told by a biker friend that your bike has to be a 150cc to get onto the highway and be legal. Youre a danger to other motorists on a 50cc. It cant keep up with traffic.

Plonking along at 60 on a bike on the highway is an excellent way to have your life insurance pay out...
Provided you're licensed, of course.

I got my learner's in April last year. It is valid for 2 years. My previous one expired after 18 months. If your existing license says 18 months, then sorry, you got it before they upped the validity period. It is only valid for 2 years if it says so.

As to the >50cc's for the highway - that is simply the minimum legal limit.
I would not recommend going on the highway with anything less than a 150cc bike anyway, because anything smaller can't reach decent highway speeds.
However, if you have a 51cc moped and you have to get somewhere that requires taking the highway, you are not breaking the law.

It used to be about 80cc a few years back and then they upped it.

Thats bat**** crazy.

I can't imagine it being legal to drive a 50cc on a Highway.

125cc would be more reasonable as a 125 can go faster than 100km/h. lol
