Loud exhausts work in traffic, I can hear them behind me. On the highway though, I hear them when they are next to me which is too late.
If safety is a concern (as it should be) then make yourself more visible to those in front of you. Wear those luminous yellow/orange jackets and ad some spots to the front of your bike. Every little bit helps. Unfortunately when it comes to bike and car having an accident, the rider normally comes off a lot worse than the car, so treat all road users as if they haven't seen you.
Just don't be a twat that drives around making all the dogs bark in the neighbourhood with your loud exhaust. Nobody is impressed by the noise you make.
I already have a yellow jacket and my helmet has a light in it by the forehead, mouth and the back of the helmet. My normal beam is so bright that people already think I have my brights on. Yeah I get on the high way that no one can hear me but it really more about trying to go around a car to go straight and they turn in front of you because they haven't seen you or heard you. Yeah no they is not my game as well, I really don't want something that is extremely loud. I just need it to be a bit louder so people can hear me. And Ill probably will keep the muffler in.
