Hi guys,

Recently I have stopped riding with a group of old friends as the environment is not a safe one.

Prompting this decision was a little fall that I had while intoxicated. After repairing the damage to my bike and letting myself heal. I sat and had a long think about my attitude to riding and why I ride a bike.

I've started to notice that amongst clubs there is this "typical biker" image where the guys party hard and ride home. As I was prospecting to join a local club, which I have now decided not to do as I do not agree with the mentality - nor do I enjoy the environment.

So I would like to know from you guys, what are your opinions on club and rider attitude?

I can tell you that although I have operated a car under questionable levels of alcohol in my younger stupid days I have never and cannot imagine ever even thinking about getting on a bike under the influence.

Never belonged to a club though but if I was to go out riding with a bunch of guys I'd much rather do it with the ThinkBike guys.

Depends on the club. My club does not drink and ride. Lots of coffee and cooldrinks. Besides, hopping onto a 230k bike and riding it drunk is as dumbarse as one could get.

Edit: But after a 14 hour ride through Lesotho, a well deserved beer is necessary before bed!

Oddly enough the Biker Venue (Que Sera) in Gauteng has campsites and encourages Riders to rather make use of that during events.
That being said, I probably have 2 Beers (max 3) if i am riding anywhere because I have noticed that I do become a bit Windgat on the bike if I drink excessively. And echoing Hamster, I would rather ride with the more responsible crowd. I am not Christiaan, but I have noticed that riding with the guys and girls from CMA is a lot more fun

First mistake to make is getting on your bike while intoxicated. But unfortunately some people need to learn the hard way.

As for clubs. It all depends on the club you join. There are some good clubs out there, you just have to make the right choice in joining one. I recently received an invitation to join a small club with members across the country. This club is one of the few that's actually worth joining since you are not forced to attend a certain amount of runs and all the other bs some clubs have.

I tend to mingle only with older bikers like myself that have 20, 30 years riding experience. I find that most too often the younger bikers like to show off and endanger other peoples lives. I had an excellent example over the weekend. I was riding down the main street in town with a laaitie in front of me on a little CBR swerving left and right all over the road like a GP racer warming tyres. He was going at a snails pace so I decided to pass him. As expected, he woke from his sleep as soon as I passed him and didn't waste any time passing me and the car in front of me who were about to turn right.

Fortunately people like this don't survive long, the only downside being that they usually take innocent lives with them.

Darwin.

If you drink and drive/ride you deserve to die, because you are putting innocent people at risk, nothing to do with clubs

I fully agree with rakabos3.

never, EVER, EVER drink and get on the road. not on a bike, not behind the wheel of a car, and not even in a tank, especially not in a tank. side note, if you have a tank and you are drunk, give me a call I will drive it home for you

seriously, drinking and riding is merit enough to end friendships older than some forumites in my case, and it should be the approach of everyone who puts on a helmet and gear.

Precisely why I've never been even remotely interested in joining any club and why rallies became less and less of a thing for me over the years into non-existence now as this mentality just irritates me more than anything else.

Most I'll have is one beer an hour when I'm riding which is 99% of the time. And then it's rarely more than two beers anyway and there is a good long wait after said beer before I jump on the bike.

In my youth I had an office party all day long at the beach one year and between drinking all day and too much sun although I was 100% capable riding home I was so aggressive that when the cops whooped whooped me I just flipped them the bird and soldiered on.

It's not so much about inability to ride as much as it is the biological inclination to take more risks.

Yeah...the people who I've seen booze more before riding than any other fraternity...

I don't really ride socially, but if I did, I'd probably avoid alcoholic morons, as I do in other areas of my life.

I'm no angel though, I drank much as a youth and blitzed around town in my car all the time, and the monumental selfishness and stupidity of this behaviour shames me to this day.

Really? Well that kinda goes against their reflective vest ATGATT safety first ethos...

Though I do constantly enjoy a good hard ride and I like find ways of improving my rider skills - especially cornering.

Though to be brutally frank, riding a bike sober is way more fun than riding even with one beer in your system. I am trying to finding like minded guys who have the "safe" attitude.

Does that mean I have to get a GSA?

I ride in a club and some guys have a few drinks and some guys do not drink when they are riding .
The choice is yours and no one at the club i ride for will encourage any one to drink and drive .
The choice is entirely yours .

I have ridden exactly once while slightly tipsy. Ihated the feeling. I have a family, my youngest was still in nappies at that stage, so there as a fair amount of guilt mixed in but physically the sensation of riding whilst a bit out of it was not something that I enjoyed.

The bike is a meditative place for me. I don't enjoy riding with other people very much, so maybe thats all part of it.

Exactly.

That being said I haven't hung out on their forums or with their people in years.

Maybe the hypocrisy is less now.

The last I looked, he had some falling out with them. So his opinion might be biased. That being said, I've ridden with them on a number of occasions and those rides were always responsible.

Well like I said it's been a while.

But it's not really biased when it's based on genuine factual observation is it?

Also depends on location and the select group I'm sure.
