Motorola Xoom My first hand experience.
I got it on contract (sorry OC but Vodacom must seriously wake up) R399-00 PM including 2GB data from Nashua Mobile
Ok So I open the box like a kid with a new toy. The device feels very nice, solid and well made. I am so excited.
I press the power button which in my opinion is in a good position as it is on the left hand side (if you are looking at the screen) behind the screed, next to the camera. My only worry is it feels like it could break perhaps?
I wait for the unit to power on which it does, simple Motorola dual core sign, seems ok, all of a sudden a graphic of honeycomb starts flashing, does not look high res and am very disappointed at first as it looks very "arcade" type graphics.
It enters the home screen and I start playing around.
The reason I went this model was due to the fact that this is South Africa and I am sick and tired of waiting for the Transformer in 3G. I NEED 3G as well as WIFI.
I had my heart set on the TF but I am sick of being treated like a person in a forgotten corner of the globe waiting for products that are usually available in other countries.
So I am sitting at a restaurant in Sandton in a meeting and lock onto a WIFI signal and enter my MWEB details and it works like a bloody charm.
The speed is very fast. My 3G is not active yet.
I start downloading an update automatically. Not to bad but I have no idea what I am doing and start regretting my decision to stay away from Apple.
I get home, lock onto my WIFI 4mb uncapped and start learning about Android and Motorola.
I update again and am now on Android 3.1. 3.2 is not available in SA and I do not want to root the device, no biggie.
I really wanted the Asus TF background with the water, well on Android I can do whatever I want, sorry Apple. You loose here !
I now have the background and it is amazing, the graphics are very good.
The next day I have my 3G, MTN. My mate has his Apple Ipad 2 on Vodacom 3G.
Vodacom you LOOSE !!! Mine is like a crack whore running to get her next fix, on speed, in a V8 supercharged, with 8 turbos. His is like dial up. Same place, Sandton, Bwahahahah.
People say that there are no apps for android????? Are you freaking kidding me? I have downloaded hundreds, free !! No Itunes rubbish. No having to sign up to Itunes to use the device.
I have a PDF reader that reads all my PDF books I downloaded, as an EBOOK, fantastic.
Crisp graphics, fast and generally a good feel. I used it a lot but found maybe 1.5 days on the battery which is ok I guess?? Thats where the TF with the dock will win.
The camera is really good and I downloaded an APP that takes HDR photos, amazing. Very impressed.
I downloaded many apps that really are impressive and all for free, if you know where to look
PM me if you want.
Android seems to be very good. The only issue I have is typing on a touch screen, now I know why I love my blackberry bold 9780.
I am not a fan of these KB's on the screen. I find I keep typing a lot of errors maybe I need a new KB app?
I did try the Google voice to text. AMAZING !!!
I speak and it writes, WTF?? Serisouly very impressed.
The overall feel of the device:
Feels very solid, nice colours and impressive screen and clarity including brightness.
Volume is good and easily accessible.
I do NOT like the charging connector, looks like the old Nokia ones. The male side that plugs into the device.
It does charge very quickly though.
It has Micro USB, do not understand why you cannot charge through it as well.
To sync it to your PC, very easy, plug in and browse like an external drive. I did have to download a driver from Motorola on my one machine, no biggie though.
This device is a winner IMO. I would have like to get the TF but ASUS SA need to wake up, we need 3G. (I know it only just came out but October / November release maybe here? )
For the pricing and the data included it seems like a good deal, for me anyway.
