I'm planning on getting back into mountain biking. Trails, x-country etc. No downhill or serious drops.

I don't have much of a budget, max R18k. So far I have 3 bikes in mind which are listed below.
If there is someone with advice or knowledge of brands and components, let me hear it please!

My choice would be the Scott (only because mine has served me so well) , but you need to see which one "fits" you best, and don't get caught on the Hype of the 29" ers.
Speak to the guys at the shops and see which one fits you best, there is nothing wrong with any of them they are all good bikes.

Thanks, I'm actually keen on 650b. I like the idea of an inbetweener wheel. best of both worlds. The giant also has decent front travel, but I've read bad reviews on the Suntour fork, However, for the price range its in you cant expect any better.

Got a few mates with Giants and they have had less problems than the mates with Specialized were are you based ?

Hi

What price can you get the Specialized at?

Thanks

Im in Cape Town. Originally from good ol' PMB. I used to be into my mountain biking back in the day. Trek 830...

Of the 3 listed in my 1st post, the Giant is the cheapest. The Specialized comes in 2nd but only because of the special I got.

3 very different bikes. Scott is x-country. Giant is Trail. Spez is somewhere in between. I think you have to think about exactly what you want, and then compare apples with apples. I would not get that Giant, because of the lower end components. The Trance 2 is the one to get, but over your budget (I'm getting one this week :D). I'm not sure you can get the Camber in your budget, but if you can, it's a good deal on a good all round bike. I would get it over the Scott.

EDIT: Okay, that is a pretty good price...

Okay, I looked at the spec on that Camber and it is also Suntour and X-Fusion (fork and shock). Have you looked at well looked after used bikes, in the classified on The Hub? You should be able to get something much nicer, virtually never used (if you take your time)...

Are those brands that bad?
I havn't tried The hub. The site seems to be down now...

Depends what you want to do, I guess... The sight seems to be up again. There are some great looking Giant Anthem X 29ers on there, for R15000-R18000. Then you get Fox CTD front and back + XT groupset. Look for a good one in your size and you are ready to rock.

Does it have to be a dually? I would rather spend the same but get a Giant XTC 29er hardtail.

Having done close to 2000km on a Revel 29er I can highly recommend Giant. Currently in the process of getting a RockShox XC 32 fitted to it.

Why are you going for a softtail? You should also consider Merida, IMHO they are very good bang for the buck.

It does not have to be a softtail. It might sound silly, but when I stopped riding, I told myself if I ever start again I'm going to get an awesome bike with big shocks, disc brakes etc etc. (back then not many bikes had disc brakes.)

So yea its purely a want, and I know a hard tail will be capable of doing what I need, I just thought if I can afford a fairly decent soft tail then I should go for it.
