Move ONT box to another room

Currently, my ONT and router are in one room, and I would like to relocate them to another room so I can directly connect a PC using LAN. I figure this will be a more elegant solution that running a LAN cable to the other room.

The fibre goes up into the roof and then down out the roof at the point of installation, so I guess I would need someone to take it back up from the installation point into the roof and then down into the other room, re-installing the ONT.

Is this something I can ask my ISP, Frogfoot to do, or do I get someone else to do it for me?
 
In your roof they should have left a spool of fibre up there (depending on the size of your house and current run).

You could just unplug it from the ONT, bring it back to the roof, unspool it then run it to the new location.

I'd have to disconnect the plug from the end, and I don't have the tools to reconnect it.

The connector thing need to be disconnected from the end of the wire. I'm not making a huge hole to fit the connector through the ceiling.

Firstly, any person you get in to move the ONT is going to charge you for that.. if it's your ISP/fibre provider you are at minimum looking at the initial installation charge.. could be more if they need longer fibre assuming there is not enough length to get to the new location..

Secondly, following my last point, if you have enough length coiled in the roof, unplug the connector from the ONT, make as small a hole as is needed to get it through the ceiling.. this is free, minus your time spent in labour.. connector sized holes are very easily filled..

If you want to run a LAN cable instead and are in cape town, I will happily supply you with a crimped cable at no cost, just tell me the length you need..

Thank you for the advice and offer. Could I just buy LAN connectors, LAN cable and a crimping tool and run it through myself (or get someone to help as I don't want to go in the roof)?

Alternatively, I could connect my PC via a WiFi dongle and not run anything, but I think the speed/latency will suffer.

You definitely could buy cable and connectors and a crimping tool and do that yourself, you would also ideally need a tester to check your crimps..

Then get someone who can get in the roof for you..
 
Okay, sounds like running a LAN cable is the easiest option. Is there a place I can purchase small quantities of cable and connectors? I see takealot sells them in packs of 50/100.

Scoop distribution will sell smaller quantities.. it's a good to buy a few extras, because you can't reuse a connector with a bad crimp..

I am not sure where you stay but Matrix will sell "not great" RJ45 in small quantities. If you are in JHB - Cable Applications or Uniterm Direct depending on which side of JHB u are in will do walk ins. Regal Security will also sell u what u need and seem to be EVERYWHERE. Just make sure u DONT get stranded/aluminium cable from Regal. Buy the slightly better solid coper core cable
 
You should post a picture of your fibre installation. The ONT and where that cables connects too - perhaps you can simply buy a long fibre flylead

Uniterm Direct (https://dbg.co.za/contact.html) will sell you everything you need - they have branches in Jhb, CT and Durban and are nice to deal with.

The ont is connected to a long fibre cable that goes into the ceiling, across inside the ceiling, into the same room again, then down the wall into a wall conduit that goes downstairs and outside to the fibre connection area outside.
