Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions for decent movie editing software.
My key requirement is ease of use (cutting, pasting, joining, title design, adding sound effects, etc).

I used Roxio for a while, but it is too limited (i think) and too cumbersome for an amateur like me.

thx

There are plenty out there.

Pinnacle is pretty good and easy to use, but you'll need to buy it.

Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere are excellent but there is quite a steep learning curve. You can get demo downloads of both.

Have you tried Windows Movie maker? It is supplied as standard with XP and isn't too bad for simple stuff... and it's free!

Sony Vegas is pretty cool. Not too pricey either. Nero Vision does quite a good job if some transitions / cutting abilities are what your after.

Thx everyone. I've taken a look at some of the suggestions, and particularly like:
- Adobe Premiere Pro 2 (R12k; way too expensive)
- Adobe PhotoShop Elements 4 & Premiere Elements 2 - R1200 (I believe premiere elements 3 is out)
- Sony Vegas - R700
- Pinnacle Studio 10 MediaSuite - R1450 (but saw some bad reviews on amazon)
-PowerDirector 5 (cant seem to find this locally)

The choice is tough however, I found a review at http://video-editing-software-revie...ttreng=1&ttrkey=video+editing+software+review which rated PowerDirector tops, but not sure how reliable this is.
Will probably go for a reliable brand name like Adobe Premier Elements 3.

Cheers

Pinnacle Studio 10 MediaSuite is over-rated and expensive.

I think which suite is best depends on what format you are trying to edit.

Final Cut Pro or its (very) baby brother iMovie. :)

Pinnacle for editing, Sony Vegas for credits and Adobe Premier for special effects.

On Windows Adobe Premiere beats the others. Sony Vegas gets decent reviews but Premiere is one of the BIG 3 (Avid, FCP and Premiere).
Premiere has lots of filters for special effects and if you want more,
use Adobe AfterEffects. AFAIC, Premiere is easier to use than FCP but Premiere crashes a lot and it often corrupts its savefiles. FCP really rocks
as it NEVER crashes, and despite a steeper learning curve it's a killer app to use. I never used AVID but apparently AVID is the KING of editing software.

I would recommed the FREE version of AVID too.

iMovieHD is also very nice. Its definately better than Windows Movie Maker though :).

What about final cut express at a much more reasonable R2k? :)

I never used it. To be really honest I only used Premiere and FCP.
I worked a little bit in Vegas (before it was bought by Sony)
and Pinnacle Studio Pro.
I had a tiny look at IMovieHD, Nero and MS MovieMaker.
iMovie is definately the best of the 3.
