"JOBS" = excellent. Not a huge fan of Ashton K but I was able to stomach him in this one.

Last night had an opportunity I couldn't pass up....."The Shawshank Redemption".
 
Hunger Games 2 : Catching Fire - 7/10

I kind of enjoyed it more than the first one, and I like where the story is going. The 3rd movie should be really good.
 
Ernest and Celestine - 9/10.

Hand-drawn French animated film for children about the friendship between a mouse and a bear. Highly recommended if you're a bit sick of soulless 3d animated fare.
 
Best Man Holiday 9/10 excellent movie, funny as hell and emotional towards the end. definitely one of the best movies I've seen this year and in a long while and believe it or not its better than the first !

I really hope they make another one this one was awesome. cant rave enough about it.
 
Once Upon a Time in The West (1968 - Western)

Slated as a cult classic and one of the best movies of all time I went into this with high expectations.
They were met and exceeded.
It exudes style and class during every minute of the movie that tells a classic fairy tale of good and bad with a flair that is rarely found in the "flash/bang" movies of the 2000's.

This is a must see for fans of classic story telling, westerns or if you want to see how this influenced Tarantino and Kill Bill.

Elysium

I expected so much more and was given so little.

The movie came across as clumsy, using gimmicks like the EXO-suit to develop the story and protagonist.

The production value is high with Jodie Foster and an aging Matt Damon playing the main parts with the grit and grime thrown in through Sharlto Copley and his motley crew of "stereotypical" goons.

The story is worth telling, with characters and a plot that will have Philip K Dick grinning with glee.

For that very reason I will give it 6/10

The problem I had with this movie, was that Matt Damon's character was infinitely unlikable. He had no redeeming qualities to me, so it made it difficult for me to feel attached to him or his actions. The subplots that revolved around the main story arc were also poorly fleshed out.

Copley's character, whilst stereotypical, was rather amusing. But at the end of this movie, nothing stood out enough for me. There was one hell of a story to be told there, but they seemed content in just bumbling through it.

Exactly.
The story is great - classic Distopian Sci-fi like Blade runner, Total Recall and Soylent green.
He should've stuck to the grit and grime of District 9 and tell a good story and use the special FX to illustrate the story but it is as if he added the story for the sake of SFX.

Matt Damon's character might as well not have had the suit...it did nothing to the story if you left it out.
It would've made him more human if he didn't have the suit, I would've been more emotionally involved with his situation.
He would've had to face greater odds then.

Copley was great, I liked his grit and psychotic character, the Jan Pierewiet was creepy and took his character to that memorable level.
the little subplot of Jodie Foster and the president was unnecessary. They wasted money on the additional actors, she was enough to provide the antagonist and develop the plot.
The old adage "Less is more." applied to this movie.

Elysium - 7/10

I enjoyed this movie. Not to be taken seriously, just mindless entertainment, great camera work and CGI.
The thing that spoiled this movie was Sharlto with his stupid 'Afrikaaner' accent.
Should've just kept his mouth shut and I would've enjoyed the movie more.
This movie made more at the box office than District 9, but of course it cost more to make. ($115 million budget)

Agreed. The special effects in some instances were spectacular- the rendering of Elysium was rather gorgeous. But the story was strong enough to carry the film without the large amount of lens-flaring.

The suit, and the entire posse of characters that outfitted him with it, were largely irrelevant to the story. I felt that they should have expanded on the motives behind his general distaste for authority. It would have at least tied into the earlier sequence, where he had promised Santiago that he would take her to Elysium.

It was creepy, yes. A maniacal South African secret agent- that is not something you see every day.

I actually felt that this would have provided an nice complexion to the storyline, had it been better handled. Anarchism is always purported to be the activity of the desperate in these dystopian environments. I felt that it was pretty interesting to have it occur in a place that was portrayed as an Utopian colony.

Definitely. Blomkamp had a much better story under the hood than he allowed himself to film.
 
I know it's a little late but
World War Z - 4/10...

I dont know what the big fuss was all about, all that distinguishes this from other Zombie movies is that the Zombies are faster than Zombies from other movies...other than that its nothing new and deserving of a 4.
 
The Family - 5/10

The best part was the ending, the rest of the movie was slow.
 
2 Guns. 5/10. Too convoluted and nasty to enjoy fully.
Biggest surprise is that actress from Mission Impossible going nude.

Fanie Fourie's Lobola 7/10

I was expecting another stupid South African comedy but surprsingly it turned out to be quite an entertaining drama about crossing the racial divide. Good acting and wonderful camera work scattered with some intense scenes. Well done Henk Pretorious (director).
