In my opinion, the 1974 film, aged as it is, is much better than the 2013 film. Quality acting and good direction will always trump big budget special effects. Not that I think the acting and direction of the 2013 film were bad, but I prefer real things to remain real. The 2013 film used too much (for my liking) hyperbole, caricature and special effects for things that did not need them. I think that's Baz Luhrmann's style (cf. Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge!).

Yes the 1974 version was outstanding; particularly because Robert Redford was the most perfect imaginable casting choice for Gatsby. Luhrmann is greatly overrated also, in my opinion.

Sure I understand that and can agree with you. My issue is when you get to the point where you adjust your own perceptions of movies based on others critique thereof like cerebrus admitted to doing. That for me is a bit much.

You should be adjusting your perceptions of everything constantly. Not blindly of course; it's a process of critical thinking and reevaluating elements that you hadn't noticed before. As an adult I'm embarrassed by some of the books that I worshiped as a teenager. It's not about being hypercritical, it's really about being so passionate about something that you can't even watch something mediocre; a bad movie makes me want to shred my chair; and bad movies proliferate because people are generally undiscerning.

And critics have universally raved about movies that sucked balls. Actually critics taste generally tend to be questionable. I prefer to make up my own mind

Yeah that's the odd thing; whereas critics are generally right about bad movies, they can frequently differ in opinion about good ones; and that's where personal taste comes in. I didn't like Inception at all even though it was rated movie of the year for instance.

Took the family to Frozen at the Cinema. Really good actually: 8/10

Bit more singing than Tangled but was decent.

Edit: Saw a preview for How to Train your Dragon 2. I give the trailer 10/10. Movie better be that good.

No the average joe actually enjoys what you and I consider crap. Between reviews, imdb & rotten tomato ratings decide for yourself. Hollywood blockbusters are generally crap for the sheeple. I've been watching a lot of foreign movies over the last ten years or so and holyweird should be ashamed of what they do with their big budgets compared to these small foreign movies which excel.

like you I'm also after a good story and there are some really good movies out there if you are prepared to venture beyond hollywood and also consider some old classics.

47 Ronin - 7/10
Based on the "re-telling" of the 47 Ronin, it recounts the story of a 'half-breed' Japanese boy, raised as an outcast. Without spoiling the plot, things go South :p

The Hobbit: DoS - 8/10
Continues the story of Bilbo's adventure with Thorin and his clansmen, as they try to reach and retake their home from Smaug. As can be expected, the ending paves the way for the last movie :(

World War Z - 7/10
Not what I would refer to as your 'average' zombie apocalypse movie. It trades a lot of the near customary gore for more of a low key thriller.
