They are doing remakes because, to an extent, they are people that grew up with these IP's, just like most of us, and they are now in senior decision making positions.The last few Terminator movies were quite bad, probably worse than the Matrix sequels. Indy movies same thing.
So are most remakes.
I think Hollywood are just trying to remake and redo the old stuff because the audiences have changed over time. It must be profitable if they keep doing it.
Unfortunately they lack the life experiences of those that created the IP's in the first place, hence it's easier just to bastardise them.
It's profitable in that it has a built in audience that you can capitalise on, but they've effectively destroyed all their existing franchises and these movies are consistently doing worse at the box office.
There have been numerous instances where they lost a massive amount of money.
You can only rely on general audience's apathy regarding quality for so long.
