Hi, I am moving to SA from Europe and am trying to get my head around ADSL offerings - HELP!

I am used to fast (8MB-24MB) lines with no caps, no difference between local and international and shaped and unshaped.

Working from home a lot and using financial trading systems but no idea how much gig I use each month.

Can somebody help me choose the right offering?

Yes.

First you'll need to have an ADSL line from telkom. Choose the month-to-month offering, do NOT sign any 24 month contracts!

Then you can look at Axxess/G-Connect as they (especially Axxess) offer a control panel for the user to check on their bandwidth consumption.

You can also use Axxess prepaid vouchers if you don't want to give out your banking details to third parties.

Welcome to the armpit of telecoms in Africa, hope you enjoyed your speeds from wherever you came from. Because you won't be getting them in the next 10+ years in SA.

The ADSL line is supplied by Telkom but you should not go through them to get it, ISPs can do it for you and are cheaper than going through Telkom.

Just about every ISP in SA records your bandwidth consumption that you can easily check, seeing as we're billed on it.

You'll want to run something like DUMeter right away to check what your current bandwidth usage is, that will decide your choice. Until you know that it's almost pointless to give options.

went thru the same trouble, having to learn the ways of the interwebz new when we moved here.
Best solution pricewise is Neotel. If you're not a gamer and can live with terribly bad pings and are in a covered area you get flatrate for 999 R. No adsl line neccesary since they are wireless.

Should you prefer adsl there is really only one provider for the line: Telkom. Take the 4096 line plus a Do3 contract which will give you 5GB bandwith. The rest you just top up with a provider of your choice.
Uncomplicated are Axxess and OpenWeb. You can buy Axxess vouchers even from Pick'n Pay and Engen gas stations. Else you just order bandwith with your credit card. OpenWeb has a rep here in the forum. MrBEEP will help you with all your questions. Both providers are on fiber, which is good.

Can't tell you how much bandwith you need tho. I'm online most of the day so I need between 20-30 gigs/month.

And, boys, believe me, there are many reasons why one should leave Europe and move to the sunny shores of SA:

wonderful landscapes
friendly people
cheap prices for food and housing
relaxed lifestyle
freedom
