To those married or living together, did pets ever come into the equation? Did you have animals that fought, badly behaved, were you allergic or just didn't like them - and what happened in the end?

I'm not living with anyone but the thought crossed my mind - I have cats and she has a little dog that chases cats. Not a great combo...

You should always date a dog for at least a year before you move in with her.

After we got married I adopted two feral cats from DARG. Missus could not handle the fact that they were feral and it put strain on our marriage.

I am the cat whisperer so the cats are very sweet and affecrionate now and the wife loves them.

Wish I was as good at pussy whispering because the wife still needs domestication.

You've been dating a month, slow down cowboy.

On the bright side: your SO is not a cat lady.

..on the other hand she is frustrated, unsatisfied and has a cat guy for an SO.

Oh, you're the guy that no one likes? Never really read your posts or understood why until now

Wow. Just...Wow.

Unless you are his wife - then I'm sorry.

EDIT: Wait, you are the OP. That comment was in reference to Kilgore's comments.

Yes, me.

I do not enjoy any form of small cages for animals, e.g. birds, fish, hamsters.

Wife does. Said caged non-humans were procured while I was away. Not much I could do but when they passed on I refused to allow any replacements.

Now left with 2 dogs and a cat (no problem!) and one bird that I will one day accidentally set free...

Bottom line... grin and bear it.

pets do settle down after a while, but there are things you can do to make the adjustment easier like Feliway for kitties and giving them a safe space and dog training. :)

Surprising with all the stories about cats and dogs out there, they actually learn to get on very well together.

Make sure the cats have got their own space where the dog cant intrude, perhaps a room with a latch to keep the door slightly ajar.

Get a dog crate to put the dog in when you want some quite time with it and the cats. Dog learns to be chilled around them.

Oh - oops, apologies ;)

Thought it was a jab at me since I have the cat and she the dog (well, a Yorkie).

Get the dog and cat to know each other and you have friends for life.
Our cat is super friends with our dogs.
He walks up to our Rottie while he lies on his back and he puts his paw on his face and just sits there for a while like that.
They are so gentle together.
