moving out for the 1st time

17 years old.
Moved 128km to go to university.
Rented a 2 room, kitchen, toilet , shower in the basement of someone's house.
It was like living in a dungeon. Shared the space with 3 other guys. Family and friend.

Did own cooking, laundry, cleaning.
Never moved back home after that.

Boy , was that a character defining point in my life. Puts hair on your chest.
 
Moved out when I was 18, did however stay with my gran until 23 as she needed some stay in help. Worked out awesome as I bought my first flat at 21(rented it out) and my second at 23, haven't looked back since.

It was tough, but it builds character. I was 21 years old and I really struggled. Being really poor motivated me to get a better job and respect money. I am always grateful for what I have today.
 
Moved out at 24. Dad suggested I start looking for a job, was still studying. I assumed he meant a job in my home city. I got a Job in Gauteng and moved the week after. Started with R7000 pay and lived with a bunch of people in a house. Never found it tough or had financial problems, wasn't funded by my parents and was still paying off my study loan.
 
Got thrown out the house at 22... never looked back.

Bought my first place at 24, and second place at 27.

My advice, get into home ownership ASAP. Drive a ****ty vehicle, as that only depreciates with age.

Wha da f? How can 21 year olds afford flats? Unless this was a very long time ago in a small town where property is cheap.
 
I was 26 and saved a whack load of cash living at home. Managed to buy my first place cash. Stay at home as long as it's not awkward. Save and invest as much as you possibly can, and when you leave home don't go into your own place. It's a waste of cash, rather share with someone.

Friend tried this.. Ends badly usually.
 
15 (std 8)
free outside room as accommodation but had to sort out my own food, toiletries, etc.
headmaster of school was aware of issues, so schooling was free to matric level.
