You can mount the aerial thingy without the pole, just as long as it is facing the tower. I have noticed that 1cm can make a big difference on the signal...
 
thanks. thought that may be the case since on telkom website they say its a small discreet device, but what i saw here on the forums was not.

Its a small device all right, but it sure as rain aren't discreet! :-) If you live in a complex with a strict board of Trustees they might have you take it down if it doesn't comply with complex rules and policies. Rather check with them first before getting it installed to just have it taken down again.
