Moving the WiMax equipment

I need to move soon to my new residence. Do you guys think I can do it myself, seeing as it is already set up and the new place is only 2km from where I am now? :D
 
Wel, the guy that did the installation, can't do it for me as he is now working with VoIP and he said I must phone Telkom, but that is going to take toooooooo long...
 
I did this. I rent a house and had to have my WiMAX equipment moved. Telkom would've charged me R490 all over again, so I just did it myself. Will see what happens on the day that I try to cancel my account though. I suppose I'll have some kind of trouble. My problem was however that I only had a weeks notice to leave (found a new place earlier than I anticipated).

But it's more than easy enough. If you do decide to take the risk, feel free to contact me if you need any help
 
Same here, have to be out by the end of this week... Can you give me some tips? Do I just have to point it in the same general direction?

Yep pretty much, but it helps to have a laptop at hand so you can actually check the signal strength.

Just access the CPE using http://192.168.254.251/ ( I think )
Username : installer
Password : installer

Don't change ANY settings in there. You will however be able to see the signal strength in there. Also, if you are moving this yourself, make sure you aren't moving too far. If you move into another sector (WiMAX towers are sectorized, 4 quadrants I think - could someone please confirm this?), you might not get any signal at all. I only moved about 500m closer to the tower actually so had no problem there.

Also, make sure you wire the CAT5 cable correctly. I had to cut mine out of my previous residence so I had to use a crimping tool to get it back on. I just kept the RJ45 jack and looked at the wiring in there.

And bob's your uncle...
 
Gents you are playing with fire - the equipment belongs to Telkom.

There are also some things you have to be very careful of and if you have a problem later you will have a hard time explaining to Telkom.

I know there are those that say it is easy - untill there are issues.

The technician who informed you to contact Telkom gave the correct advice - I know that it may seem like a bitter pill to have to pay for another install but at least you know it will work.

If you move into another sector you will loose signal - and you will not get it sorted unless you get Telkom in!!!

I know we're playing with fire. :o (or I did at least). You definately right. This is not the right way to do it, BUT, I was in a run for time. And I DID call telkom and they said they could help me in two weeks. So I just didn't go back to them since I didn't have 2 weeks.

SharkBait, maybe it is best if you try them first, and first see what they say they can do.

This is going to cause a good laugh in about a weeks time when you eventually decide to move this yourself. Please keep us up to date. If, however, you succeed in moving this (Telkom's) equipment successfully, please let us know all the trouble you had to go through to reach your success. :D

Also, isn't it technically stealing if you take some one's equipment and permanently moving it to another location? If it is, I'll suggest at least let them know that you are moving it (in the same sector) to another location and get them to make a note and give you a reference number just to keep your side of this prism of darkness clear! :D

LOL. I would move it myself. If you can't get it to work after the move, then call Telkom and wait the 2 weeks for them to come sort it out. But if you can move it yourself and it works then bonus :)
 
Silly question but what happens when the next resident in your old place gets Wimax?

When you contact telkom, they will do the address change as well?! The problem isn't about contacting them, but when they can do it...

"The equipment remains Telkom's as it is classified as Telkom Connection Equipment (TCE) and not Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). An installation charge is levied once off for the installation. Telkom retains the right to charge for the damage or removal of the TCE from the premises."
 
So, I phoned Telkom twice today and got the same story from Michelle and Delia. No WiMax coverage where I am living now. Strange thing that, since I only moved 2kms away...

(anyone else noticed that they only have 2 songs playing while on hold?) Luckily I was only on hold for 20min+...

So, now I am going to get someone to help me to install the aerial thingy and test for myself to see if there is no coverage. If there is, I will let them know about my address change and if there isn't I will as them to collect the equipment. :(

Can you still see the tower from where you are living now? Shouldn't the signal be strong enough to get coverage even if you don't have direct line of sight?
 
@Lord-Nikon, not sure about the LOS thing, but once the aerial thingy is mounted, I will be able to see. Can see the tower from the ground, but maybe from the roof...

Quick question for you guys.
I am thinking of getting wi-max, but live in a security complex.
I saw a picture of the wi-max aerial on a pole and its horrid, my trustees would not go for that. Is there any way to mount it without the poles etc?
