Moving to Android from iOS. Device recommendations please?

On a lighter note.

You Apple lot should sort out your VoIP assistant :p

Touché hahaha ;)
Honestly I think I'd most probably switch Nokia if Apple were to falter.

I.e. Microsoft and Nokia's approach I believe is also to simplify things similarly to Apple I.e. stark contrast to Android focus on flexibility.

I got that, hence I find your views to be more balanced than most ;)

I have worked in the Unix since 1989; so you could say the same for me... Yet its maybe because I'm also a developer that I prefer simplicity over flexibility ;)

Hmmm reading your quote I think I have a more of that laziness portion than the rest.

My view, if you do something more than twice its a script/program and
I up it to launchpad ala GPL style so I dont have to write a manual and keep it up to date <--- Now thats what I call lazy ;)

Hence our views are similar, hahaha :D
We script / code most everything, just find it produces a much more complete solution..

My goal is not only to make it easier for me but also for those utilizing the solution, I.e. I prefer that the solutions by in large run themselves and that users are relegated to only monitor and on the exception reinitiate failed processes.

I also get irritated by poorly designed / implemented solutions from other developers, hence I'm true of all points and why I find I prefer simplicity over flexibility -- the only area I prefer simplicity in combination with greater flexibility is the development language, APIs and IDE.

What's your current scripting / coding preference?

This is a daily headache for me, which makes me focus a lot more on proper software design, because I have to undo several years of terrible design choices by people who are no longer working there, and they left behind absolutely no documentation :(

On a related note, here's some interesting reading: http://www.aosabook.org/en/index.html

If it funds your toys, travel, ... do it with a smile... Be thankful that their inadequacy has provided you with a substantial workload to fund what you want.

I'm sure you take the same approach as I would, throw away the crap and start from scratch, as opposed to making any sense from it ;)

LOL, I'm intrigue to see how you find it... So don't forget to keep us in the loop.

I for one prefer simplicity over flexibility, hence interested in how easy a previous iOS user finds it, especially one that appears to be less interested in the techie parts.

Just because I don't have much of a music collection doesn't mean I'm not interested in the "techie parts" :) I am a developer and am quite interested in the prospect of being able to design something myself and put it on my phone, as romanticised a notion as that may be ;)

I love the simplicity of iOS, but I have been using it for a while (I also own an iPad), and as I said in the OP, I am a bit bored with it. Just feel like seeing what else is out there. That being said, If Android doesn't appeal to me, and the iPhone 5 offers something real in the way of new features and improved ergonomic design (the iPhone 4/S looks hot, but is not great to hold) I won't rule out moving back. I don't see why people feel you need to be exclusively bound to one "faction".

I will def keep you guys updated and will try point out small, seemingly insignificant differences that I feel are better or worse. However, I am planning on leaving the stock OS as is for a while, at least until I have familiarised myself with it and read up enough on rooting/flashing.

Thanks we share much in this regard; look forward to reading your future posts about all things Android..

OMW It gets worse

Fail Siri fail, then again its a point I can agree on :D

Edit: in my minds eye I can just see how Jobs would have reacted to this, and if was still in charge how many people would have lost their jobs on it.

Lol gotta love Siri :p

Not a fail in my books, at least they both share a common heritage (Unix), whew it could have been worse :D

/EDIT
Apple appears to have updated Siri, neither of the questions produce the previous answers shown, for example:
1. What is the best smartphone ever = Siri say it's the one you are holding, or Wait there are other phones?
2. What is the best operating system = Siri offers to search the web I.e. standard Google search, definitely not Linux.

So even though Steve isn't there they're still making adjustments, lol :p

Tried another question:
1. What is the best tablet computer ever = There's the iPad, and then there's well nothing else (lol :p)
Or The Apple iPad is the best and that's not just my opinion
2. What is the best computer ever = All truly intelligent assistants prefer Macintosh
3. What is the best monitor = ViewSonic 22 inch LED HD monitor - Piano Black

Appears they have covered most their bases ...except of course the monitor :p

I've been doing that quite a lot recently :p

It has arrived! Really impressed with DHL. Ordered on Thursday afternoon from clove.co.uk and it arrived an hour ago. Duties and VAT came to R1042 for the total order (Think 14% + 10%). I signed up for the DHL email notifications and received constant updates on the status of my order including one at 08:30 this morning stating that the courier had picked it up from customs and it was on its way.

I also included quite a few additional accessories with my order:

1 x Case-Mate Barely There Case White - HTC One X (HTC-BTWOX-B18, £12.49)
1 x Beats By Dr. Dre In Ear Headset (White) (GAD-BDIEW-B43, £45)
1 x Black Gel Case - HTC One X (HTC-GCBOX-C7, £4.17)
1 x HTC One X SP P730 Screen Protector (2 pcs) - 66H00106-00M (HTC-SPP730-A24, £5)
1 x HTC One X CAR D110 Car Cradle And Charger - 99H10769-00 (HTC-CARD110, £37.49)
1 x Clingo Universal Desktop Mount (GAD-CLIDSK-F13, £14)

A bit busy at work so have put it on charge and will upload some pics in a bit as well as my initial impressions.

Peace!
