Moving to Dubai for work - share your experiences

I have an opportunity to move to Dubai for work within the next 2 - 3 months. I wanted to get a better idea of peoples experiences working in Dubai, specifically South Africans who have moved there for work.

I have some questions:
- What was your overall experience like working and living in Dubai?
- Which area do you recommend living in?
- Do you need a car or is the public transport sufficient?
- Any tips or suggestions for a newbie moving to Dubai?

I don't have kids, so luckily I don't need to worry about schools etc.

- It is a great place. You will never be bored.
- The Marina or Jumeirah Beach Residences aka JBR. Especially if you are single.
- You need a car. But to go out drinking a taxi is easy to come by.
- Nothing can prepare you for the first time you experience the climate.
- Familiarize yourself with the customs and the laws of the country. You are a guest in their country. Act accordingly.

Thanks, I have read up quite a bit about the laws and customs of the country. I am pretty sure I will be able to abide by them. I will be going there alone, how difficult is it to make friends?

You just need to remember, you're in their country as their guest, its not your country.

So just go along with their rules, regardless how you feel, out of respect. Its really only difficult when people think they have the right to go to a country and act like they're in their country - but they're not. Then they do stupid things and get into trouble with the law and create a media frenzy.

Nothing irks me more than when there's all this terrible news about people who openly made out in an Arab country and got into trouble and its terrible..and wah wah wah. Have some respect, its their country and their rules. If you dont like it, don't go there :)

Other than that I'm sure you'll find Dubai to be quite an experience. Enjoy it!
 
Heh. Imagine putting that same spin on people moving from a shariah country to a western country... Fit in or FO?

Fair is Fair. If you're asking me if I also agree with the French who banned burka's in certain places - yes. Its their country, respect their rules. :) The world needs more respect for eachother, not tension.

I am pretty conservative as it is so I don't have a problem abiding by the customs.
 
My 2c. Its hella expensive here, takes a while to adjust to the sticker shock. With VAT being introduced, prices will go up.

Re working, be sure to know and understand your employer. If you have the opportunity to work for a multi-national in a free zone, that's likely your safest option. When you look at the offer, make sure you understand the allowances, and know that those aren't included in any severance. You should expect a housing allowance, home flights, medical and schooling (one day).

As someone mentioned, you cannot fathom the climate till you have lived through a summer.

Finally, as has been mentioned, know the rules and stick to them, if you are not sure, ask, and then get it in writing. You are a guest, if you can't abide by the rules don't come, you will find yourself in trouble.
