I've accepted a job offer yesterday and would have to relocate to Johannesburg. I'll be working in Newtown and am thinking of moving somewhere in the West Rand.

Does anyone here have, or know of , a place me, my wife and our 2 cats can rent? I'd even appreciate the contact details of reputable agents I can contact.
Our monthly rental budget is up to R7000, excl. water/electricity.
Our preferences are:
  • 3 Bedroom
  • 2 Bathroom
  • 2 Lockable Garages
  • (Small) Pet Friendly
  • Preferably a townhouse or similar, with a small garden
  • Roodepoort/Eastern Krugersdorp area's, don't want to travel more than 25-30km to work if possible.

Try Greenside, quicker access to Newtown. Traffiic will be quite hectic from Roodepoort and Krugersdorp

Edenvale is also a good place to live for Newtown.

Try JustLetting - google it - but - read those contracts extremely carefully.

yeah i live in the west rand and i would not reccomend it if you travelling to newtown every day. Traffic will suck your soul. +1 on greenside, awesome area.
also surrounding greenside is northcliff/darrenwood/linden/rosebank/victory park/craighall park

sorry don't know of a place but my one mate studied in newtown and said its not a bad place :) well to work at

Edenvale is also a good place to live for Newtown.

In that case I would suggest looking at Modderfontein/Lakeside.

Btw, where is Newtown? The one on Google Earth does not seem right...

+ 1... the less highways and distance = better in jhb

You can also try randburg, robindale, bromhof, boskruin randpark ridge... Should take you about half an hour from that area with backroads.

+1 on traffic

It will EAT you alibe travelling so long and soon you'll wonder why you decided on that area. Btw - why did you decide on that area?

Yeah, why West Rand? Traffic will be a serious ball ache coming in from there. Check out Norwood, Highlands North or Orange Grove too. They're in NE Jozi and and are a 15-20 minute drive in to Newtown.

Best place if you working in Newtown is South of Jhb.

You will also more than likely have easier access to Newtown from there than from Edenvale or the east side.

Coming from the West is also fairly hectic in terms of traffic.

From the South you would most likely even be able to head home during lunch. Also for the price range in terms of rental you would definitely be able to get a place in that range.

And other areas like - Robertsham, Ridgeway , Mondeor and surrounds. Auckland Park and Melville + Westdene type areas will also provide easy access to Newtown

I work in town, right next to Newtown and live in Auckland Park. look for places in either Auckland Park or Melville but make sure you are far away from students.

I have family that travel from the West rand to Town and it can take up to two hours each way. If you really want to live in the West then I suggest looking no further than Florida.

Dude for 7k you can live much closer than 25km to work, my lord that is an epic amount of km's for jhb morning/afternoon traffic. Depends also which way you travel. For 7k i would not be looking for a place 25km away from my work

I grew up in Krugersdorp but I am aware that things have changed a lot in 15 yearsm especially traffic wise!!

My wife will in all likelihood get a job in either Randburg or Roodepoort so one has to accommodate her as well.

Greenside would be than ideal....the price range would be close too

We are having a hard time finding available places on the net - most of the ads posted are outdated. We did however come through this past weekend and my wife seems to like the places in North Riding, Sundowner & Honeydew. Will have to check how those places fit into our budget. Grabbed some local papers and ads whist we were here...

Any comments on those areas? As mentioned previously, my wife will be working in Randburg itself (Pretoria Avenue) and me in Turbine Square in Newtown, JHB.

I've hear that Radiokop also isn't a bad area...?

All those areas are pretty good and pretty much 10 minutes for the wife to work... you on the other hand my friend should prepare yourself for an hour and a half each way unless you have some sort of flexi-hour work arrangement so that you can miss the peak 3-hours
