Moving to JHB. Location help please

Have a look at Sunninghill, its right between Paulshof and Kyalami. If you live in Sunninghill you are mostly going against traffic in the morning and afternoon.

Sunninghill is also an option, being on the other side of Kyalami, and a nice suburb. Traffic in the are can be nightmare at times, but most likely entering in the morning and leaving in the evening. You could also hit Woodmead Drive from Sunninghill, down the M1 to Braamfontein. However, traffic in Woodmead is also a problem at all times.

Does anyone know the Gautrain bus routes in Sunninghill?

Stay in the South, Mulbarton, Glen Vista round there.

That's miles from Kyalami? Once you hit the N1 north in the morning from 14th Avenue/Beyer Naude you will sit for ages until Rivonia, in Sunninghill, to get off the highway. This is horrible advice for his fiance.

Any "Nice" suburb names that you can recommend in Midrand. I'm a Durban kid so know basically nothing :\

Carlswald is quite good and near the better shopping centres. I'm not to well versed in the residential suburbs, having only really worked there. Waterval Estate is up and coming, though no where near complete, it gives easy access to both Kyalami and Allandale/N1 - but I'd worry about the amount of traffic that place needs to cater for in the near future.

Some mentioned near the airport, but I have no idea about staying in that area?

Nope, you take M1 N amd then left at Woodmead. Takes you straight to Kyalami.

It comes in at Maxwell and circles down Witkoppen, right at Nanyuki, left at Simba, right at Leeukop, Right at Rivonia, Right at van der buyl and then back out again at maxwell.

Still very far- it's at the tail end of the M1, and is still 40km away from Kyalami. OP would be compromising both himself and his fiancée's travelling arrangements if he lived there. Nice area, though.

The traffic around the area is already ridiculous.

Given the choices i'd say Sunninghill is the best albeit pricey but since just moving up and budget is 7k..yea it could work for a 2bed 1 bath. Most people moving up to jhb initially move there if working in northing jhb and sandton so neighbors will come and go.

Midrand.. i'd not move there if you paid me to lol.. price wise it can be cheaper with dodge surrounds or extremely expensive <-- at which point u kinda shocked because its midrand haha.. uhm yah. Jhb is all about knowing what is a suburb or two away.. Midrand = Tembisa + Diepsloot if you do go that route take out a map and make sure you have plenty of other estates between you and dodge areas. You will see this being repeated continually for areas throughout Gauteng and unlike Cpt and somewhat Dbn.. poor areas are scattered all over so please consult maps

Which one of the two of you can most easily change jobs? With those areas mentioned you are screwed.

If you take kyalami out of the equation then Douglasdale, Olivedale can become options - my friend drives to Braamfontein everyday without any issues and we are relatively close to Paulshof, Lonehill etc.

Traffic is like this - avoid anything North of Witkoppen (especially Cedar and William Nicol) unless you work in that area. Travelling East in the morning and west in the afternoon, especially if you live in the Northern suburbs is a bitch. Example - Douglasdale to Houghton in the morning, worst pain known to man. Douglasdale to Roodepoort in the morning - 15 minutes if you exceed the speed limit like a joburger.

Now get a map and figure it out (but you are essentially screwed so make peace with it)

Just stay as close as possible to the M1 North/south halfway between Kyalami and Braamfontein somewhere close to The Wanderers stadium. Anything north of this you're looking at traffic and heavy rentals.

she can take the highway North and exit at Woodmead and you can take the highway south and exit in Smit street near Wits.

There's an option, but Illovo is also expensive.

OP, is it more important for you or your fiance to be close to work? Who is more likely to travel in rush hour, who has options?

I would also consider Midrand, specifically the area from Buccleu offramp towards the R55 and Sunninghill which is on the other side of the R55. Thing is, Gautrain goes straight into Braamfontein/JHB CBD , so consider getting close to either Midrand Gautrain station or Sandton/Marlboro stations then you have a lot of options to get to Braamfontein and your wife would be a short drive from Kayalami.

Last I checked the Midrand stations bus route extends through that Waterfall Estate to R55/Woodmead (Eskom HQ at MEgawatt Park).

My sister got a place in Sunninghill right where it goes into Maxwell/Waterfall , so you can hit the N1 via Buccleu easily instead of Rivonia . So ultimately the right spot in sunninghill / lonehill ? would be magic.

I would stay away from anywhere further south towards Fourways/Bryanston , or anywhere that requires you to take William Nicol rd to get in and out to the highway. Even Rivonia rd is better than William Nicol these days.

F1ve_claw, since we're divulging this information, what are your favourite places to stay in Durban? I've knocked around Hillcrest and it seems quite larney, but bit of a drive. Personally I think Maritzburg is my favourite since it's rather sizable and rather enclosed, like a little Pretoria. I'm guessing there's a lot of traffic in from Umhlanga too

For the OP's budget, look at mid M1 e.g. Orange Grove, Linksfield, Norwood, and as someone mentioned, Sydenham. Try steer clear of anywhere too near Louis Botha Ave.

When looking at the map just know that the layout is the highway forms a ring. Your points of traffic are all sitting at the roads that cross the highway. Fourways you sit with Witkoppen where there's pretty much permanent traffic. Then you take into consideration that summer rainfall messes up all the robots and a lot of roads. This just destroys traffic. Bottom line, there's probably going to be a compromise somewhere :)

An example of my commute. I stay in Bryanston and work in Sandton CBD, it's a 7km trip and can take me anything from 20-40 minutes. Friday morning it took me an hour because there was an accident on William Nicol >.<

Don't forget find an area with good internet like FTTH

I don't mind the travel - rather enjoy driving

I've lived in Kloof / Hillcrest my entire life so don't know much else. I work in PMB and REALLY don't like it here - so the hours drive is the current sacrifice I make

Gief good internets please :D
