hey all

Im currently based in London and NYC and thinking about setting up in SA for a while.
Obviously coz all my work is done via the net (i have a 4mb dsl line both here in manhattan and london), what DSL provider would you recommend in SA

i need:

- reliability over everything else
- no stupid download cap (20gb+ is ok)
- quick connections to NYC + London

thanks for your help

Stay where you are!

dsan - The sad truth is that you cannot get a 4mbit line in SA. ok i lie you can but at a cost that most large companies cant afford.

Telkom (http://www.telkom.co.za) is the only provided of "Reliable" bandwidth and even that is dodge.

they currently offer a "broadband" solution of 512kbits with an account of 3Gb Cap. you can rather get a larger cap of 20 or 30Gb from another company like Axxess. (http://www.axxess.co.za) but you are restricted to the 512k speed of the line.

there is talk of a 1mbit offering which i believe is happening in august, after talk of launch in june.

there is I-brust (http://www.iburst.co.za)- they offer a 1mbit connection via wireless but do somemore investigation if you want to go that root as I hear that they are not the best service in town.

Bottom line: some people may no agree with what i have meantioned above but they will all agree that you must expect to pay large amounts for Internet in South Africa because of Telkom.

I don't know whether I should laugh or cry, but here we go. Lines will be available through our ONLY network operator which has the monopoly: TELKOM (aka HellKom, Telscum, Telcum. Trust me the list just goes on.) Don't expect a 4Mb line here. Best you can hope for is 1Mb line coming out later this year (coming in August). As for ISP things are a little more rosy. The two main ones at the moment are All You Can Eat(AYCE) and Axxess. Do a search on the forum, you should be able to find all the info you need (Prices, service etc.)

Oh, and good luck…….. you gonna need it.

There is another thread on here with someone from the US asking similar questions ... have a read there.

In summary:

Max: 512k down & 256k up (1mbs comming soon)

All line provisioning is through telkom.

Multiple ISP options but most feed back into telkom(saix) ... 3/5/10/20/30 gb accounts available.

Uncapped offerings also available but speed is generally poor on these.

Typical latency to NYC is around 300ms

Traffic shaping IS used so you may need to check if the procotols you use fall into the "shaped category".

wow i knew it was bad, but didnt realise it was this bad.

Its really sad that telkom havent moved SA into the 21st century.. hell no wonder no-one uses the web as a business model.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, ill wait and see how the 1mb connection goes

when i lived there 8 years ago, telkom was typically displaying all the traits of a monopolistic organisation.

there was talk of this "2nd" operator, but hell that was years ago and it still aint happened yet.

Its sad, Kenya had DSL before SA and thats kenya!!

Where about in london are you, using bulldog?
S.A has more if Idsn speed and some broadband like 512.
If your getting BB, dont get iBurst. Trust me, from the complaints ive been getting there lame!

Don't move back here if you want speed!
I was in the USA for the past week.WOW!

Darn it I am back in Helkom country!

Come now guys, SA is a kickass place to live. Our poor ADSL offerings really doesn't take away all the other cool things about the country. I say this having lived in Europe for a year, and having been in most of the major cities there. We really shouldn't be discouraging people from investing in the country.

sorry for double post, but go swim with the dolphins then tell me our country isnt beautiful

I agree man, we have an awesome country with great down-to-Earth people, great weather, biltong, braais and Springbok rugby. Here if I'm sick of the city I can pack my car and go to the dam for a weekend. I love this place.

Agreed, each time I have been to SA (since 1998 I have travelled there each year) the place seems to be getting better each year, and I like it more and more. I can't pack up soon enough to get there. Granted, broadband in SA sucks, but I have a 15MB fibre to my house and that played ZERO role in my decision to move to South Africa.

Agreed stayed in the states for a while broadband bliss....but nothing beats SA in many other ways!
