Mozilla Thunderbird

I'm thinking of setting up a second e-mail app. & seriously comtemplating Thunderbird. I've browsed the archieves and came up with some bad reviews going back as far as 2004.

Is the new version more stable? I'm thinking of using it mainly for GMail, Office Outlook '03 would be default.

Never had any problems with it myself, using Thunderbird 1.5 with Gmail.

Personally I find the gmail interface much better and easier to use ... but that's just me

My inbox currently contains 11815 items and the the oldest item is dated Feb 2004; it's currently 1.28GB in disk size and NEVER (or hasn't yet) hangs/locks up/blue screens/platzes because of having that much mail in it ...works for me!

It's only going to cost you a few minutes of time and bandwidth to download it, then use it and see.

I presume so, just access it through normal POP access, never tried it on Outlook so got no basis for comparison.

The only hassles I've had with Tbird, is very slow Gmail pop access at times. Not a Tbird problem, but either aggressive shaping by Telkom or limited bw from google.

I'm guessing its probably Telkom, noticed it works better on non-Telkom connections for me.

Thanks guys - installed & setup with GMail. Found this https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/2110/, it minimizes Thunderbird & Firefox to the tray instead of the taskbar. MMmmmm well I'm sure u guys have already have it, jus thought it may be of interest

Guys, what about saving e-mails, settings, etc before formatting of my pc?This is normally done to a pst. file in Outlook, can't find any facility for this.

If you look in ~\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data or something similar you should find a Thunderbird directory with your profile in it, can't remember the exact path.

I've pretty much ditched all my personal emails now and working solely with gmail.

It has everything I want, the spam capabilities are awesome and I can reach it from anywhere on the planet. What more could you want?

At work, I'm on Outlook, most of the rest of the office are on Entourage (MacOS)

Gmail is ultimate for personal mail, with the exception of online orders/logins, which is with another personal account.

Never had a problem with Thunderbird either and mine is always open and in the tray. I run it with 6 imap connections, of which 4 check mail every 2 minutes. Before my previous restart it was running like that for 7 days no problem. Chews quite a bit of memory though, but that's why I got a gig of the stuff

No, seriously, I've been considering having all my emails forwarded to GMail because I just love the Archive function.

Gmail rules! I can track my e-mails much more efficiently by archiving old e-mails and leaving e-mails that still requires my attention in the inbox. Searching for a e-mail is also a breeze. As long as you know what you're looking for.
