 I wanna make some MP3 disks for my car but I need some tips. Perhaps someone can help.
Obviously I could just copy a whole lot of songs from the PC, but:
  • Can I divide the disk into subfolders? (Say, one folder for each cd)
  • If I can use folders etc, Can I use long filenames/folder names or must I use only 8 dot 3?
  • How do I ensure that ID3 tags display correctly. Are there any precautions?
  • Can any car that has MP3 capability play any MP3 disk, or do some play them differently?
  • Can I use CD-RW disks?

Any other pointers? I will appreciate the assistance.

All of the above questions depends on the firmware installed on your particular player. It differs from brand to brand and even from model to model.

I've had 2 JVC mp3 players for my car and I could do all of what you mentioned, except I've never tried a CD-RW disk.

Google your player or just try it out. :)

Similar topic - I can't remember if it was also for mp3 cds, but sometimes I've have trouble playing cd compilations, that I made, in my car. They would skip a lot or they would crackle a bit.

Somebody once told me to draw along the edge (not top or bottom, but the bit that would touch the ground if you had to roll it along - just to be clear up any confusion) with a permanent marker. I didn't believe it, but tried it anyway and it worked like a charm! I've since done it a few times with cds for my car and even for divx dvds for my home player. Might just be the cheap-ass cds/dvds that I sometimes buy.:D

We could help you more if you could tell us what your manual says. Usually it will define the file system structure of the CD-R, the maximum bitrate of the MP3, whether it can be variable bitrate or constant bitrate, the naming of the directories and also what sort of ID information can be included in the MP3 file (eg name of track, artist, genre etc).

. . . . could tell us what your manual says.

;) I'll probably get the car in the next couple of weeks. I kinda wanted to make a couple of disks before I get it. It's a Honda (no shuttle). This might give some clues but I don't know if the sound systems in all the Hondas are the same.

just make sure you close the disc once done copying, else "she wont work" .... and yes if you create folders the mp3 player should recognise the folders ...

I have a 2006 Honda Civic and the factory fitted mp3 front loader handles long filenames, folders and re-writable CDs. There is a limit though to how many files you can have in a folder (including the root folder). I think it's 255, but I'm not sure. I only had that problem once with an audio book that was in mp3 format.

I don't have to finalize mp3 disks for my car - just normal cda/wav cds.
