MP3, iPod replacement is here

That does not look like it's going to be comfortable to carry in a pocket.

Cell phone without the phone, camera, browser, apps and connectivity functionality ......

Betcha this fad lasts less than a year

A $400 FLAC player. I got a Sandisk that plays these files at a fraction of the price. And it fits into my pocket.

Young is wasting his time.

People are going simpler and smaller.

Yeah no... at $400 I would rather buy a decent(ish) smartphone that can do lots more than just play audio...

I think the point is that this aims at audiophiles and music aficionados, not your average folk who couldn't tell the difference between 128kbps MP3 and FLAC.

Personally I wouldn't buy this, but I don't think $400 is too much. The top of the line Ipod touch is already R4000 with 64 GB storage. The Ponoplayer has 128 GB storage.

Like PostmanPot said, this is aimed at the same people who spend R100k on their home theatre speakers (because they have the money or they can actually hear the difference).

Looks like something from 2005... 128GB of storage will surely become irrelevant if the "high-resolution audio masters" files are large? From where would one purchase these albums anyway? Does it come with "high-resolution audio" headphones too?

Agreed its aimed at them...

But for him to claim the MP3 and the iPod are being replaced by this is complete bollocks...

Most artists offer lossless/FLAC digital downloads.

Otherwise lossless audio can be ripped from CDs.

I doubt it comes with head/earphones, that's another expensive component which cannot possibly be factored in at $400.

Ahhh.... completely forgot about CD ripping :o

Figured as much. Can see some folks buying this, plugging in their ipod headphones and feeling rather ripped off :D

They'd feel a lot less ripped off if it was FLAC/lossless though, coming from MP3/lossy where the bar has been set. The difference will certainly be discernable on Apple EarPods, which aren't half bad themselves.

I also doubt it will replace MP3 due to its prevalence on phones etc. But I also don't think he claimed it, rather some journalist tried to spice up the article. Have looked on the web a bit and nowhere else could I find this.

According to some reviews it sounds a lot better than a normal MP3 player even with the same earphones or headphones.
