My (really)old Transcend MP870 is starting to really show it's age, it's been good to me but it seems to be time to replace it, buttons are getting stubborn, it's somehow slowing down etc. Problem is I can't actually FIND something like it except for grey brands on BidOrBuy that people complain stop working after even half a year. There is the MP710 still in stock in a few places but it's somehow devoid of FLAC capability, re-converting random music every time I transfer would be stupid and it's probably just as slow as what I have now... I noticed years back that Transcend basically abandoned firmware support on my model when they actually removed features in an update to fix stability problems and the MP710 is from about the same time as the MP870.

Anyway I need something similar to the MP870:
  • Rugged (the included silicone cover helps obviously) with a way of attatching a strap to it. This beauty has suffered accidental falls that would shatter most phones.
  • small
  • Don't care whether it has bluetooth or wireless, cable transfers are always easier/better in my experience anyway unless it's MTP.... if goolgle actually updated the drivers since 2015 this might not have been a problem but anyway.
  • 2" abouts screen so I can properly alter playlists without needing a PC..... shuffle is annoying
  • Long battery life, charging once a week is better than charging once a day as usually happens with most current phones
  • speaker
  • standard mini-stereo earphone jack
  • MP3, FLAC

Am I on a fool's errand looking for this (preferably under R2k) or have I missed something?

SanDisk Clip Sport should meet most of these needs except for the speaker. Currently on special with Takealot.

They don't make MP3s anymore which sucks cause I don't want to gym with a R25k phone and drop a dumbell on it.

Yeah you are probably going to need to get from China.

Problem with these MP3s today is that the sound is pretty horrid to, they can't drive a Sennheiser earbud.

I just wish we could go back to small dedicated MP3s a 1" screen or no screen at all.

I wish Apple would reboot the ipod shuffle.

You're already carrying a device with you that can play MP3s? I mean why duplicate it?

The same reason wrist watches, alarm clocks and e-readers are more useful to some people than others, different use cases require different devices. Also having more devices that consume small ammounts of battery life means you only have to charge them once a week, month or even once every few years..... compared to a probably insanely expensive phone that needs a new charge every day or so.

banggood.com seems like an excelent source.... though most of those brands seem to have no websites.... I'm wary of grey goods

EDIT: also saw in some of the comments there are "chinese only" versions to be careful of

I saw the XDUOO's on newegg too, anyone have any hands on experience with any of these brands?

Read the first post.

Your phone isn't usually one of those things.
