A colleague dropped this mail in my inbox today...

-------------

Dear Friend of the CSSA
You and your colleagues are invited to join us to hear the reality behind Sentech’s ‘My Wireless’ broadband offering, which promises true freedom from wired networks.
Our guest speaker is Winston Smith from Sentech, who launched their ‘My Wireless’ service a few months ago to bring broadband internet connection to users, both mobile road warriors and permanent parkers. Criticism has been widespread, but nevertheless there has been good uptake of the service; and Telkom has recognized the competition and is busy revising prices for their broadband services. Winston spoke recently at Futurex, and is very knowledgeable on all aspects of this boon to internet users. Don’t miss this interesting presentation!
Sentech have kindly sponsored theevening, to be preceded by the Gauteng Chapter AGM (your chance to catch up on what’s happening in your Society!) and followed by snacks and drinks.
Feel free to invite your friends to help make this a special evening! (and maybe sign them up as members)
WEDNESDAY 25 AUGUST 2004

Roger Dawes

EDIT:
I think a few of us should lug our laptops and modems and go to the computer society event and politely ask the gentleman to demostrate 128k 256k or 512k as the packages promise.
I wonder though whether there will be a Q & A session

now to decide to go and listen to this gent or should we go en masse and protest ... the bad service and ask relevent questions ...

I would go if i lived in Joburg [:P]
Seriously though, this is a great opportunity to get some information out of Winstoned...everyone from this forum that can make it should go and make their point. This could be the chance to engage Sentech directly and maybe get some sort of collaborative thing going...

Telkom needs a leash, ICASA needs some guts, and the SA consumer needs to make it happen

the facty they sponsoring it will mean they control the format i doubt there will be much in the way of honesty [has there been so far] ...

i would love to know WTF is going on but i doubt they even know

guys, as most of us wont be able to make it.. please record the audio if possible and make transcripts. We should get as many of us there as is possible. Sentech wants to engage with the public then we will engage. There HAVE TO be laptops there with SRTs and other things running for the inevitable.. "but Winston,... "
If I had transport or it was later then I would go :(

EDIT: I think we should send our LoneGunMan along as well as maybe kickass72 etc. Guys, time to get in Mr Smiths face in a big way

I can't help thinking that Winston Smith is just an in joke by Sentech.

The anti-hero of 1984 ('war is peace freedom is slavery ignorance is strength') is none other than WINSTON SMITH.

WINSTON SMITH's job is to rewrite the archives of London newspapers so that they conform to the government's most brilliant and most appalling project - the deconstruction of the English language into Newspeak, the language of the Party. Each successive edition of the Newspeak Dictionary has fewer words than its predecessor. By removing meaning and nuance from the vocabulary, the government hopes to eradicate seditious and anti-social thinking before it even has the chance to enter a person's mind.

Sounds a bit familiar ?

I will be at the meeting to hear this soothsayer and his 'newspeak'. Time for a live demonstration of 'SLOWBAND'. I think we should set up a table outside the Constantia hotel so that everyone can try 'SLOWBAND' before the meeting.

I doubt that we would be allowed to give a live demonstation to the audience. I am sure it was a condition of Smith speaking that no Sentech modems would be allowed inside!!

can someone who is graphicaly inclined do a logo to put on T-Shirts ... once the logo has been approvbed take orders and get em printed ...

there aint much time though ... prehaps next time ...

Use that brilliant logo spoof that ITWeb did a while back (the one with the sad smiley) - I think Rodent has it archived on his website?

how will we manage to stick togehther ??

think there will be some free grub? I'll probably go, maybe we should try meet at 18:15 , get an organised plan of action going. Somethinglike, we go in and we play by their game, put up our hands and ask questions.. let him explain, if they aren't taking questions or somehow attempt to shut us up.. WE ATTACK!

Mix some saltpeta with some sugar, makes good smoke bombs :P Or we can just use the pies if we wanna keep it simple I spose.

See u guys there :>

That is rather unfortunate. Mr Smith will achieve a great measure of success then in making more promises for something he cannot even demonstrate.

I imagine then that the presentation will be a regurgitation of more lies neatly printed out and shrink wrapped on yet to be delivered IPW modems to thousands more gullible consumers.

They were wise to choose a venue to present where there is no signal for us to make them eat their lies.[:(!]

ok how bout meeting in midrand im thinking the wimpy off alandale [cnr old pretoria/le roux] road as there is not much else in the area ...

please make suure you all send a request to the email above ...

I open the bid at R100 to someone who gets a custard/cream pie in Winstons face, with pictures!

No more catenna, now its a custenna

I'll happily match that bid!

Headend

10 users, standing outside with laptops, and perhaps a download of a nice 600mb distro, using explorers avg download calculations, hopefully showing a download running at 2KB/s.
This should frighten all from being suckered by such a desparate marketing ploy!!!

Yet at the same time, they need the suscribers, without them, our fees are likely to go up, or mywireless project scrapped due to insufficietn profit margins/funds.
But, the more users, the slower the network, how can we possibly win with sentech
