I've found a few free ones but can anyone recommend a freeware / opensource program that will be able to read and or work with MS Project files?

The open source alternative to M$ project is OpenProj. Not sure if it can read the files though.

OpenProj by Projity is a desktop replacement of Microsoft Project. OpenProj has equivalent functionality, a familiar user interface and even opens existing MSProject files. OpenProj is interoperable with Project, with a Gantt Chart and PERT chart etc.

This worked. It opens MS Project files.

Yip and saves as Msproject files too, handy for those pesky engineers.
