Oi! Leave me out of this...
Yeah - the guys you work for spend far too much on MS licensing. That being said you're going to fork out for RH licensing now![]()

I don't know about open source, but free certainly. It would be stupid for them to release a free Visual Studio version (Community) and not one for SQL Server (there is currently a paid version called Developer which would be the likely candidate).Wonder if they'll release a free opensource version

SQL Server Express... its free and pretty damn capable.
Yup...Indeed - for a simple transactional app Express has everything a dev needs.
So is Visual Studio Community. The difference is license not capability. Microsoft is learning that you should allow as much of a sandbox as possible.And developer is not something that would ever be released as a free product since its pretty much enterprise.

Its not quite Professional or Enterprise in terms of its full capabilities, its close though....
Microsoft is fully aware of the sandbox aspect... and are embracing it, but SQL is a different beast to Visual Studio in terms of allowing a "free" version with full capabilities.
For Dev's you can get an MSDN license which gives you access to all versions of their products at a fraction of the cost - which is nice.
Because they hate anything Microsoft because a blog post said so.
Microsoft Has Just Blackmailed Linux Twice in One Single Week and the Media Didn’t Notice or Just Ignored It Because of Microsoft’s Charm Offensives

well said.Yeah - TL;DR;
I don't care for either pro windows or pro Linux site's opinions. If Windows is better I'll use that. Linux serves me better right now so I'm using it.
Don't care for fanboyism.
Meanwhile, as you may have already noted, https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2016/03/07/announcing-sql-server-on-linux/
Some penguins are unhappy about this, others view it as a victory. ymmv
