The GS60 Ghost Pro is MSI's 15.6" thin and light gaming portable. The top spec machine is the GT72 with the 880m and 4xraid0 and CoolerBoost2... but I think for a lot of people this machine hits a real sweet spot. It has the following specs:

  • Intel Core i7-4710HQ
  • 2x8GB DDR3L-1600 (Max 2x8GB)
  • 15.6" Glossy IPS 16:9 3K (2880x1620)
  • 256GB SSD (2x Kingston RBU-SNS8100S3128GD SuperRAID)
    1TB HDD (HGST HTS721010A9E630)

Techradar:
Whether you settle for the FHD model or spring for 3K gaming, the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K is one 15-inch gaming laptop to beat. Though, while an undoubtedly impressive feat, beyond-HD gaming is neither something I'd call a must-have feature nor will it be all that great on this series of cards come 2015 and beyond.
Just don't expect the endurance of an Ultrabook from this rig. And gentlemen, for the sake of your future spawn, don't play with this thing on your lap without protection. (I mean a laptop cooler, you gutterhead!)
The GS60 Ghost Pro 3K is not only a beauty to behold, it offers more hardware in nearly as premium a package as the big boys. But unless you're seriously intent on getting into post-HD gaming right now, save yourself a few hundred bucks and opt for the 1080p version.
TrustedReviews:
There’s plenty of power inside this machine, and MSI has squeezed top-level components into a chassis that’s slimmer and lighter than any gaming notebook we’ve yet seen. The screen and keyboard also excel, and the speakers are good. It’s a contender if rivals are expensive, but only worth a purchase if you’re going to be using it at a power source and on a desk – as poor battery life and thermal performance are the MSI’s key problems.

You'll be able to get an eyes-and-hands-on of this model at rAge this weekend :)

I would not touch MSI anymore.
Not because of the system itself but because of the absolutely disgusting after service I received from Corex as the warranty agent.
I took a laptop in twice after having purchased it in less than a week.
Now I do understand that sometimes you just buy a lemon of a machine but to try and convince me that there is nothing wrong with a laptop that had very apparent hardware issues... sorry but the incompetency at Corex was horrific , they were rude to the point where i told them Im leaving as I will not tolerate that kind of treatment. Not from anyone , nevermind the fact that I was the client.
They then offered me a refund with a 35 % handling fee ... Considering the laptop was less than a week old . The problems existed from the moment it was delivered. Also the fact that 35% handling fee on a laptop costing close to R20000 I found to be a tad excessive especially since the CPA states in this case that they are not allowed to charge any handling fee.
Lawyer sorted everything out about an hour later.
So unfortunately I cannot advise anyone to buy MSI in the Cape Town Area.
The fact that you will have to deal with Corex as after sales / warranty support and you have been warned that it will not be a pleasant experience and you will probably will have to get your lawyer involved to avoid getting the short end of the stick.

That sounds like quite a painful experience, I can understand you'd be put off going near anything to do with that company again. I'll pass this message onto MSI HQ. It's good to have that kind of direct feedback though.

For the others - there isn't a local pricing on the 3k model yet. In the US it's around $1800 at Amazon etc, so you can kind of extrapolate from that what you'd expect to pay here :)

If you want to have further details , pop me a PM and I will run you down the whole "incident" .
Im not here to shame MSI , I had very good experiences up to that point.
The hardware never failed in the warranty period so I never needed after sales support and like I said , it left such a bad taste in my mouth that I will not take the chance on MSI`s products until there is a good after sales service and presence in Cape Town.

They responded quickly and I think they will be in touch soon so I will message you when I know more.

Well in a nutshell :

I ordered a laptop the MSI GX70 from Wootware .
The laptop got delivered and since delivery the screen started showing artifacts while typing as well as when you move the lid open or closed and in between as well as when typing or any pressure on chassis.
Correspondence with Wootware happened via email and I produced screenshots and short video clips of the problem.
The artifacts did not replicate to external screen so it was clear that it was localized to the internal connection to the monitor.
That was repaired at Corex.
In this process they insisted that I pay for the repair since there was no warranty sticker on it and accused me of opening the laptop which I did not do since I just got the laptop brand new and carried a warranty .

After some emails to Wootware it was repaired under warranty.
I insisted they put on a warranty sticker as they now opened the laptop and I do not want to run through the same situation in future.
(My wife took the laptop in as I could not take off work).

As soon as the PC came back though, it had more problems in that now the soft keys at the top of the keyboard (Your Fan control , DVD quicklaunch , Keyboard backlight keyboard control etc buttons) started randomly activating and deactivating while typing. Even closing and opening the lid activated them randomly .
Pressure next to the touchpad where the is no buttons on the chassis activated them randomly.
This time I actually took off work as I demanded either a new unit different model to insure this one wasn't simply repaired again and given back to me as it was clear this one was problematic and I was using it for work as well as gaming .
Corex was informed that I would be bringing in the machine.
Corex told me that this might be a software problem
In preparation for the visit to Corex I did a complete factory restore of the machine.
Updated all the drivers to test if this wasnt indeed a driver/software related issue as they suggested even though i did not for one second think it was since pressure on the lid or chassis where there are now button and keys produced the random activated soft-keys.
Pressing on the soft-keys itself was problematic as well.
Pressing the soft-keys would activate another random soft-key (eg pressing the DVD player would put in airplane mode , pressing airplane mode would activate fan control etc. There was no structure to it though as pressing the fan key for eg would activate dvd player , pressing it again would activate the airplane mode the next time , pressing it again and all the soft-keys would activate at the same time .)
Take note the above eg also happened with any light pressure on chassis , monitor lid points where there were no keys.

So arriving at Corex I was able to replicate the problem instantly .
I was then asked to wait as they cannot confirm its a hardware problem and that they think its a software problem.
Now having been IT and a technician for many years , i was dumbstruck when told me to give them the laptop so that a technician is going to open up the laptop to fix the software problem.
Now the average Joe might have fallen for that but nowhere ever had i come across any reason to open up a PC to fix a software problem.
I told them that the repair will happen in front of my eyes and they will not open the laptop as then they will confirm its a hardware problem and I'm entitled to request a refund or a replacement.
I also told them that i do not want the same situation where they claim no warranty because the sticker got removed by their technician as with what happened with the original problem and then try and charge me with the repair bills.

They then flatly refused to to assist me further without taking the laptop into their workshop without me.
It was very obvious that this was a hardware error and I was astounded as an IT tech myself that they could claim anything otherwise.
As discussions got heated now by this time as I was getting frustrated that by now it became clear to them that Im entitled to refund or replacement of my choosing according to the CPA laws yet they refused me that right.
This is the time i decided that even a replacement unit is now out of my mind as I did not want to have to deal with Corex ever again.
So going forward I demanded a full refund so that I can buy a different brand as to avoid having to deal with them again.
I then contacted Wootware and explained the whole situation. I was told to leave the laptop there and they would sort it out. I refused as I was convinced that this would just end up in another repair and then claims that there is nothing wrong with the machine and Im not entitled to a refund or different model .
As you can understand , If I pay R18000 on a laptop and it breaks down twice in a matter of a week I have lost faith in the machine so I would not want that specific machine back.
Anyways by this time I have spent 4 hours at Corex and I was getting to boiling point. I phoned Wootware and told them , I am driving all the way from Milnerton to Somerset West where their offices are and dropping the laptop off and I expect my refund to be in my bank account asap so that I could go purchase another laptop to be ready and setup for work the following day.
I packed up the laptop back into its original packaging and left Corex.
About 15 mins later I get an SMS from corex stating that they will offer me a refund at 35% handling fee.
I was astounded as taking into consideration that this laptop was close R18000 that would be almost R6000 handling fee on a laptop that was faulty from day 1.
I got in touch with my lawyer and explained the situation to him . He said that according to the CPA they are not allowed to charge that fee and that he will contract them and provide feedback.
When I arrived at Wootware I gave them the machine and told them I expect the refund shortly.
Credit to them , they provided me full refund plus the money I paid in shipping when I bought the laptop originally.

Corex on the other hand I will never want to deal with again and thus as long as Corex is the sole warranty agent for MSI in Cape Town , i personally will no longer buy MSI products or recommend MSI as brand.

WS60 2OJ 4K Edition
A lot of you out there have been asking for 4K resolution for added productivity. Of course, it has always been possible to connect external monitors to your MSI notebook, whether it’s a workstation or a gaming notebook, but what if you need more on the go?

We’ve heard your prayers, and gone on to complement the 3K (2880x1620) panel in the WS60 lineup with a 4K Ultra-HD one with a 3840x2160 panel. A resolution this high (as large as 4x Full HD panels clustered together) will of course increase productivity and do more even if you’re stuck with “only” one screen.

The WS60 2OJ 4K edition will be available world-wide starting January, but if you look closely, you might be able to find this in stores already, in select regions.

Just dropping this here:
MSI wins Hardware award at NAG for the MSI GS60 2QE Ghost Pro 3K Gold Edition
MSI GS60 2QE Ghost Pro 3K Gold Edition with the NVIDIA 970M graphic cards, 3K IPS panel that MSI has chosen for this model. From where we sit, there's really no reason for any gaming notebook to be thicker or heavier.
