Eskom chairman makes dubious claim about performance improvement

Eskom chairman Mteto Nyati claimed that after he and other Eskom leaders joined the utility, the energy availability factor (EAF) improved from 50% to 70%.

This claim is misleading as Nyati does not do a like-for-like comparison. Instead, he cherry-picked data to make Eskom’s improvement look better than it is.

All I know is there was loadshedding and now there is not. The details don't matter. If I were the boss at Eskom, I would probably also parade around claiming I fixed it if, from an ethics perspective, it didn't bother me.

Ethics aside, the 95% in this country don't even know what EAF is. They only care that the lights come on when they flip a switch.

The real test will come for them once the government money given finishes. Can they continue to run without aid? I think they will be overtaken by private generation, as it may be cheaper in the next decade.

I personally don't want to keep feeding the beast, so I will generate my own. Corruption and skyrocketing electricity prices will never cease. The rising electric prices may abate for a short while, but they will start stealing en masse again, and they will need big bailouts.

This is a national problem that will never get resolved on all parasatals, even if DA gets in. But yes, no diesel burning and no LS so congrats to them. And when, not if, they start the decline, private should have taken over most generation by then. It's only a matter of time.

We are consuming less every year.
LAst cycle we consumed less than when we had the worst load shedding

Seems the coal companies are preparing for the potential drop in coal demand coming in the future.

Not surprised as we may not see another coal power station built again. Another reason I think Eskom generation will be non relevant because they will compete in renewables with private companies. It’s easy to see who will win that.
