Something that is very frustrating is the fact that I can't use the 3G function on my Jasjar with MTN.

I tried my brothers Vodacom sim card and have perfect 3G reception at home and at work.

Wake up MTN. First sort out 3G before thinking about HSDPA.

Thats cause MTN doesn't have 3g technology. Edge which is supposedly to compete with 3g is basically GPRS on steriods. Where Edge can probably go upto somewhere around 290k and I think GPRS is roundabout 64K. 3G on the other starts at 384k and with vodacom upgrading there network, should soon be able to go upto 2mbits.

!?!?!

ir I don't know where you think you're getting your info from but MTN DEFINITELY has 3G as in WCDMA/UMTS 3G as well as EDGE. Although the coverage is not as extensive.

A simple look at their site would have told you that.

You can say that again.

MTN has got 3G. Just the coverage is bad at the moment.

3G Coverage is excellent in the CBD and Canal Walk.

MTN, best for rich, worst for poor

MTN is growing much faster than Vodacom, but globally and only slowly in SA. I see MTN beating Vodacom with 3.5G in 2007. If you live in Gauteng, WC, or KwaZulu then MTN 3G is your best option IMO :)

MTN 3G coverage stinks

I have checked over the last 3 months with my Jasjar everywhere I go. Yes, if you live in JHB you are fine.

No coverage in Stellenbosch
No coverage in Northern suburbs Cape Town
No coverage in TableView
No coverage just outside Canal Walk
No coverage just outside Centurion (PTA)
and so I can go on. Just everywhere I work and live there are no MTN coverage. There are however EVERYWHERE I've mentioned @Vodacom coverage. I paid R10k for my Jasjar and it is effectively USELESS on the MTN network - Unless you only live and work around the MTN offices in Jhb.

O'h by the way MTN still have not fixed their 1Mb SMTP server limit :-) ...and their POP3 MTNLOADED server still falls over with just over 1000 users....I mean even the samoosa shop around the corner can get a POP server working better.

I agree with earlier writer who said that MTN was great! I prefer MTN, but 3G is fashion, its in - where is MTN?

Why worry, you anyway do not have electricity to work your computers or charge your cell-phones or have power to your mtn or vodacom cell towers!!

LMAO @ the guy who said MTN doesn't have 3G. MTN offers GPRS, EDGE and 3G. I believe it's Vodacom that doesn't have EDGE (please correct me if I'm wrong). EDGE is there for people who don't have 3G coverage, but it's a HECK of a lot faster than standard GPRS and it actually has a faster upload speed than 3G! Once again...dont ask me how I know this....but you can trust me. (wink wink)

I assume your surprise at not getting any 3G coverage in your area it because you are not aware of coverage? 3G is still newish and not everywhere - although MTN is damn slow in extending coverge in the cape town area.

MTN Coverage

My Jasjar does not have EDGE - only 3G.

Problem is not so much the current coverage, but I have to renew my contract soon and I really have a problem. If I knew MTN would upgrade 3G in my area (home and office) in December, I'll wait, but I am most certainly not going to wait 3 years. If that is the case, I'll rather change my number and sign up with Vodacom. and then because Vodacom-Vodacom numbers are cheaper and my wife calls me 10x a day, I'll have change her contract to Vodacom as well - ditto for the kids.

As earlier post mentioned that MTN is too focused on their rivals (Vodacom) and to protect their plans that they do not consider their clients.

MTN Street Level Coverage MAP EDGE/3G

Hi People

This may help :

http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=11789#

Select the block on the right that states "Are you covered, search at street level"

Its an interactive map that can be used to search at street level for EDGE and 3G coverage.

Hope this helps
