Hi,

We recently started using MTN for SMTP [Vodacom Edge was down for weeks so they lost our business]

Whenever we send email the message "this message has been scanned by pinpoint blah blah blah" is attached to the message.

Is there a way to turn off this "feature"?

Best regards,

Murray

Don't use the MTN SMTP server. Use the SMTP server provided by your hosting ISP. Will give you much less headaches, especially for laptops that roam between different networks (ADSL, Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Neotel, company networks, etc).

If you use the SMTP provided by your bandwidth/ADSL/3G ISP, then you will have to change your settings each time you connect to a different bandwidth/ADSL/3G ISP. Using the SMTP provided by your hosting ISP should work accross all bandwidth/ADSL/3G ISPs.

Hi, thanks for the response, a bit off topic. But anyways, its interesting.

I cant bypass the isp smtp server, at least in my mind the cost vs benefit does not work out. Why?: I went to my hosting provider, and said, "I cant get pop before smtp to work, the server does not recognise me". They said "use your connecting isp smtp server". So thats what we do. They block standard smtp ports anyway.

My email users all are working on desktops anyway. There are one or 2 laptops, but they use gmail. All the desktops are set to use smtp.screamer.co.za (our primay isp) But their SMTP server can not be relied on. So I redirect all smtp to my backup provider - currently MTN.

I cant believe there is no way to disable the "this message has been scanned... blah blah blah" message.

POP Before SMTP is a very old authentication method, and it is not very secure. You should first try to use normal authentication, where you provide a username and password for the SMTP server, which is usually the same as the ones used for your POP server. Ask your hosting ISP about it. Also ask them if you can authenticate using SSL or TLS, and which ports to use.

If you don't mind me asking, which ISP provides your company network with Internet Access (ADSL, Wimax, 3G?), and which ISP hosts your website and email accounts?

Usually Internet Access ISPs will block the SMTP servers of other Hosting ISPs on their network, and force their users to use their own SMTP server. If this is the case, then I suggest you find another Internet ISP. WebAfrica works great for us for hosting and internet access, and we use Afrihost as backup for internet access. We can access the WebAfrica SMTP server from the WebAfrica network (obviously), Afrihost, Vodacom 3G, MTN 3G, Axxess, and Cybersmart networks. We don't ever have any SMTP problems. I recommend you give your Internet Access ISP the boot, and perhaps even your Hosting ISP.

I stopped using MTN's SMTP years ago (when I still used their data) for this exact reason. Good luck getting them to undo that rubbish. My main reason for wanting this was (at the time) that software I was using made direct use of Mail to send the license request to the developer. His system read that email and sent it back, as it followed an exact format, with the license. MTN's rubbish had me trying to license for over a month.

That pinpoint kak also caused co.za registrations to bounce. Try telling that to the genius at MTN that insists on its inclusion.

Hey, MTN, how about catching a wake up on this?

OP: Try setting machines to use GMAIL's smtp...

Hosting=Webonline; connection is Screamer Wireless - backup is GPRS(edge)

The connection is Screamer because they are the only provider with a local hisite, and the only other options are ISDN, GPRS[edge] or VSAT - all expensive and/or slow. There is no DSL out here in the sticks. So our choice is, well we have none.

gmail rewrites the senders email address to the gmail account that you logged into the server with. The only way to change that is to host your email with Google; they want R500 per year for each hosted email account, sorry, too expensive.

I notice if you search for "scanned by pinpoint" alot of the results are entries from blogs by people obviously posting to the blog using mtn smtp. So it must annoy the hell out of a lot of people.

In your Accounts and settings, I do believe you can send from another address in Gmail. Haven't had to try that though.

Before you do that, you have to create a gmail account for each user. This takes time and effort and complicates things unneccessarily. I think I might start talking to my hosting provider about using their smtp server securely.

Did you try 1555?Those guyz might be able to sort you out
