Yesterday, we wait an hour for help in a store for migration of a contract on to prepaid as the contract is ending.
We get there, and now they need a physical ID, which we weren't told to bring initially.
Given the form and told to email it.
Emailed it, now today I want to check that they received it.
Phone them, wait for 20mins on hold. They do their whole security check thing and then ask to make a pin so they don't need to do the security check. Then only after going through that whole process they tell me I need to speak to another dept.

Put on hold for another 20mins, the next department also wants to do the security check; now busy from holding so long have to put down.

I don't understand how a cellphone network with this level of support incompetence is still thriving.

...lol....well, now I do not feel that bad....woke up this morning and my HTC One X goes...can not connect to mobile network...- after trying the whole switch off/on thang...gave 808 a call...they will reset my line, switch off phone, take out sim, wait 20 min...after all that crap, still no joy...called again,...same procedure...then tried there live chat service....they tried flipping switches, somewhere in cyberspace....after all that, go to MTN store to check sim...oh yes, give them ref number, so they can update logged fault...alas, woman behind counter looked at me as if I was speaking Klingon....after much of, we do not test sim cards, I just did a sim swop...lets see what happens...

That's strange, because I cancelled my contract over the phone about 1 month ago. I think I dialled 808 or one of those other service numbers. It took no longer than 5 minutes, including holding time. My contract was already 1-2 months expired though, and operating in month-to-month basis.

You might want to try this route, before breaking your head further. Within a few hours of hanging up, the SIM card was on MTN Prepaid, and I had to load up airtime. They did warn me that if I want to cancel immediately, I will forfeit whatever remaining airtime I had left for the month, and that I would still be billed at the end of the month, as billing is done at the end of the month (as opposed to in advance).

MTN both in service and customer service has taken a nose dive lately, the best thing to do is just leave their crappy network

Yes, I am now in another store and they are giving different information from the first. Can you believe the store consultants have to hold on the same number as everyone else.

This was exactly how my experience went... Even the "1-2 months expired" part is spot on. :wtf:
I put the sim in my wallet and forgot about it.

Some months later I randomly stuck it into one of my old phones and found there's R500 of airtime on it...
Even though MTN told me I'll lose any and all unused airtime from the contract.

Not sure how to best use it though, as Prepaid MTN is a rip all round. (Using Afrihost data and CellC for calls.)

Actually, come to think of it, there was some airtime, about R35 on the SIM card after it was moved to prepaid. So I don't think I forfeited a lot, if anything at all. Did not check if any data or SMSs carried over.

I upgraded to an iPhone 5S a couple of weeks back at the Kollonade MTN. They just asked me for my phone number, made me sign everything and I walked off with the phone. They never asked me for any form of ID whatsoever.

My contract is expiring 27th of this month, then i'm porting after almost 10yrs with them. Signal here at home is almost now non existant, sometimes it's gone almost for an hour. Call and data rates are expensive. Time to let them go. They used to be the most reliable network in my area up till 18months ago. But ja.... all good things comes to an end.

I had the same problem last week. The people at the MTN I went to told me that they can't/wouldn't do the paperwork to cancel, as "no one bothers to process it". That call centre is crazy, I spent over 30 minutes on hold, and get disconnected all the time. The security check asks the craziest of stuff, how many people even know their account numbers? Plus I was once asked how many dependants I have, information they shouldn't even have.

I'm glad to finally be on Telkom Mobile now.
