I downgraded to an R 84 contract, 12GB data, 125 min.

They said if I upgrade again on Black Friday there might be an early upgrade fee of one or two monthly payments.

I spoke to MTN yesterday. My contract (MTN Choice 50GB, BF2020) expired on Saturday. They indicated I will only be charged pro-rata for the days since expiry (Saturday) if I upgrade.

I upgraded to the Mobile Internet Ruby (70GB) yesterday. I did the upgrade online, was effective within 30 minutes.

However, the app still shows an overdue balance of R1818 (which was the full amount for my previous contract), instead of pro-rata of R163 (or close to that) that the current bill was before the upgrade went through.

So either the app doesn't include pro-rata calculations, or they have no idea what they're talking about.
Update: after struggling with various agents, it seems that MTN has no idea what they're talking about.

From what I can now tell, no matter how many days into the billing period of your now month-to-month contract you upgrade / cancel, you'll be charged the full amount for the month. This can of course be many thousands depending on which BF contract you were on. If you upgraded, you'll be charged for both contracts for the month.

If there isn't an excellent BF deal, I'm just going to cancel my contract and move to Vodacom.

50gb data once off maybe, not a month.

And I won't touch MTN with YOUR 2 foot pole never mind my own. They're a crap company, greed driven and non-customer-centric. I've been with them for 16 years and their quality of cell service has decline dramatically to the point of it being unusable, so I moved to a different provider.
I had the same experience after many years with Vodacom and it got to the point that i was actually convinced the Devil was the CEO of Vodacom so i switched over to MTN , didnt take me long to realize that Satan owns all the cellular service providers.

Can you please tell me the details of that contract? Does it have a name? A web address?

Has anyone ever checked if what MTN is doing is legal. I assume most of us signed up for the initial BF deal in 2016 (24 months), renewed in 2018 (24 months) and then renewed again in 2020 (36 months).

I’m 100% sure that on the last renewal most of us would have renewed the contract definitely after 20 Nov 2020 (That year IIRC BF was 27 Nov).

Therefore technically 36 months should only be up on the day prior to the contract being approved and the data / minutes being allocated. MTNs billing cycle should be irrelevant to these dates and MTN should be honouring the entire 36 months.

Don’t think it’s legal for them now to overcharge whilst 36 months is not up.

Maybe MYBB can do an article on this if people are overcharged.

Received my new bill for next month… however mines seems to be in order and they still honoured the original deal until 11 Dec.

I'm not sure that I fully grasp your issue, nor am I an expert on contracts; I myself use prepaid. But as much as I understand, you need to give 30 days notice; in other words, if you want to cancel your contract by November 30th and your billing date is the 1st of a month, you'll have to request a cancellation at least on October 31st, and that's the case for a month-to-month contract. Otherwise, you will be charged a penalty, kind of like the price of a month. For long-term contracts, most companies charge up to 75% of the remaining months as a penalty, which is the prime reason I never went with a long-term contract or ever will.

So I renewed a couple of contracts on the 9th of december 2020. 1 was a business the other for my wife.
The business contract start/end date is 9/12/20 to 9/12/23. The wifes is 9/12/20 to 11/11/23.

Not sure why the difference.
