MTN Black Friday Discussions

One factor may be that those services/products have local caches.

The largest cost drivers for wireless carriers is (in order of importance) actually radio spectrum, human capital for support, tower operational costs, and lastly transit/peering/caching

Its still a factor that carriers include in their product model, but the primary intent is artificial segmentation to encourage upselling behaviour

I'm getting antsy about what to do, wait for new Black Friday deals but not wanting to deal with the price going from R500 to R4000 when the contract ends on the 11 of November.

Can you not renew on the 11th? Or downgrade to a lower contract which costs like 100 a month? Will you still pay the new cost?

There is apparently a R0 contract that you can downgrade your contract to, it's basically like a contract that you can load airtime/data on a lot like prepaid. Then upgrade it when the time is right.
I can't remember what it's call but I'm sure someone here will know.

So I popped in to MTN and email, received the same which was:

If you teminating your contact with numbers you need to provide 30 days notice.

However, you can change it to prepaid, retaining the number, on the day prior to expiry. And they will immediately convert to prepaid. Obviously don’t go to them at 16h59 when they close at 17h00.

They told me to wait for new BF deals, if I don’t like, then I must just migrate to prepaid by before the “new cycle” which would be the 17th.

I received a call from MTN earlier today.
They offered me the same contract that I’m currently on (My MTNChoice 400GB) with no promo data for R531

Unfortunately it is a Vodacom product.
That sucks, I could have sworn there was a similar MTN product, have you tried asking them Or asking if there’s any other method to essentially put a contract on hold/ice once the contract period is up?

Sorry it's called MTN mychoice zero. They don't advertise it at all, so you have to ask for it as a upgrade/downgrade option, but it keeps your sim active, indefinitely. Actually a really cool feature. I currently can't afford another sim at the moment so it is perfect for me
this?

This is where I'm not 100% sure, so my billing cycle starts on the 7th of the month now does that cover the previous month or the next month ?
So in other words is the bill for the previous 30 days or the next?

Do you get a option with MTN where you can do a contract on the device only, without the airtime/data etc.?

these bastids not phoning or anything for an upgrade
Check if it's being blocked as spam.

I had a bunch of calls from them that were blocked, got a call on Tuesday and they offered the 200GB @ R399 package. Told them I'll wait for the BF deals before deciding.
