MTN BlackberryInternet Service

That makes sense, it was on Wednesday I noticed speeds were back to normal throughout the day. At least they sorted it out, once again using my BB is a pleasurable experience.

Not quite as quick as it was a few months ago but certainly an improvement over the speeds I've been getting lately. Only got 390kbits/s average last night at midnight after 3 speed tests. I'm SOOO glad I'm not with Vodacom. It took an hour last night for my SO to download the 2.8MB new BB messenger on Vodacom BIS.

Im on MTN BIS and it rocks. Also had a small issue with setup but 2 or 3 calls and it was running.

MTN BISBES

Speedtest results this morning

Download speed is: 382.48 kbit/s
Max Speed is:16347.5 kbits/s

Upload speed is: 26.34 kbit/s
Max Speed is:51.09 kbit/s

So is there like a Internet download manager or Torrent app for Blackberry? did some casual searching but did not find anything.

Hey guys.

I recently decided to get the missus a blackberry and activated the BIS on it. I downloaded opera mini and started using it but the phone keeps notifying me that opera mini is trying to access some low level network connection. Is it still utlisiing the BIS or is it now using normal MTN WAP? the EDGE is always on capital letters so i am not at all sure.

Thanks

MTN BIS is flying today. At around 10am I downloaded a 21MB file at an average 61KB/s (488kbit/s). Very quick for mid morning.

i would do that but i cannot dial 1555 or check my balance on the phone. It just keeps on telling me that the numbers do not exist. Guess i will wait a bit and see what happens.

Shanem, opera doesnt use BIS, you are going to pay for the internet usage on opera

divv, Uhmm it is 1555 if I can remember correctly.

1555 and 808 didnt agree on some things so I had to reactive my BIS

1555 can only be phoned from staff numbers now, all other callers get the error "the number you have dialed does not exist"

look at the edge / 3g at the top right hand corner. if it in in caps, ie EDGE then bis is activated, otherwise it is not.

hmmm. That is a bit of a letdown. Are you sure tho? Is there no way to get around it? The download limit on the default browser is not on and Opera is so much cooler... :)

See other threads like Blackberry 8520 tips - as far as I know people have gotten Opera to work on BIS. Something about changing the APN.
I haven't tried it...

Go to:

Menu > Options > Advanced Options > TCP/IP and tick APN settings enabled, for APN: put blackberry.net user/pass blank.

That will ensure that the _only_ way out is via BIS and you can avoid accidental data charges from errant apps.

You can just clear this info if you want to revert.

The Blackberry Bold Tips thread has this nicley documented though :D
