Mtn Cell Broadcast Down?

Now is GPRS also cheaper or is it still gona stay the same.coz R2.00 for 1mb is not kwl to pay for.

No GPRS discount, just on-net, prepaid, voice calls.

If you want cheaper than R2/MB, get a data bundle...

Does the % value indicate the pre-paid call discount? If it does then MTN are sharks. If I move 2M to my left, I get "MTNZONE 65%". If I move back to where I was, I get "MTNZONE 25%".

Yes, but only if you subscribe to the MTN Zone prepaid plan. The reason the discount differs is to encourage usage of under-utilised cells and so use the network more optimally, prevent congestion on peak cells and deliver a better overall experience. The call discount from the cell the call is initiated on stays valid for the duration of the call.

What if the discount changes 1 second before you press the call button on your phone? After all, it takes time to type in a number and some phones don't show the cell ID when you type in a number. Or is there some window period in which the higher discount still applies even though a smaller discount is being broadcast?

Then it's just tough - over the course of a month it will all average out to a decent discounted rate. The rates are only changed on the hour (for now). What people will pick up is that certain locations always have a good discount at specific times and then plan their calls for that period to get maximum benefit.

Maybe everyone should synchronise their watches to the network standards so that the seconds align :p

Any chance on giving us an indication of the 95% cells, locations and times? ;)

"Bye, honey, I'm off to tower X to go and make my calls now!"

MTN is moving cell broadcast from channel 50 to channel 100 this weekend to facilitate a new product.

Notification has gone out to service providers but it's probably not published yet due to launch date constraints.

Can someone please give us more info (or provide a link) about the cell broadcasts and the various channels?

Also, how to receive and view these different topics on a cell phone or on a PC via a GPRS data link.

Thanks.

Here you go.

It varies from phone to phone, you should consult your phone's manual for that information.

This is what I posted in the P990i thread...dunno how u change it on a Nokio, but i guess there will be similar tools... :)

Just a silly little setting, with regards to Cell information, I figured out on the P990i. (This is only applicable to MTN).

At the moment, if you've got Cell Information turned on, you will only see 'MTNZONE 50%' or a different percentage. This is for prepaid users and doesn't benefit contract users at all. So how do you get the Cell Information back on your mobile's display, e.g. CENTURION, IRENE, MALMESBURY?

Follow these steps....

Go to Control Panel > Messaging > Area Information.

Untick Cell Information.
Tap on Channels and highlight Channel X. Click on 'edit' and change it to Channel 100.
Now tick Area Information.

There you go...you should be able to see Cell Information like before.

*I just wish I could get rid of the REALLY annoying Y'ELLO BROADBAND' info that pops up occasionally, I use Vodacom HSDPA with my Hauwei E220 modem. Hello MTN?

Thanks kingrob, and to answer your question, use channel to 250 to get the area info without Y'ELLO BROADBAND.

Ah, cheers ginggs, I changed the channel to 250 and haven't seen Y'ELLO BROADBAND on my screen since... yay!! ;)

I just subscribed to the 'weather channel' hehe...and it works a treat! Really cool. ;)

Here are all the channels you can subscribe to (courtesy of Ginggs) on MTN :

040: Weather
050: MTN Zone discount % (Supposed to be Area Info / Cell Info)
100: Cell Info with Y'ELLO BROADBAND (Recently moved from 050)
250: Cell Info without Y'ELLO BROADBAND
900: Tower Info
910: Antenna Info
