Hi MTN,

Is Cell Broadcast and area info down for whole of Gauteng?

I'm only able to receive area info on channel 100 where its normally on channel 50. Hence this info not displayed on desktop of N95 or any other cellphone.

I might have it wrong, but isn't cell info only broadcast on the GSM-Band of the network? If my phone switches to UMTS/3G, I receive a message "Cell Info not available on this network"

MTN is moving cell broadcast from channel 50 to channel 100 this weekend to facilitate a new product.

Notification has gone out to service providers but it's probably not published yet due to launch date constraints.

What kind of info can one get on cell broadcast. I only get like 10 of the same weather predictions per day nothing else (I'm MTN)

My CB says MTNZONE 80%

What's that about?

Its a new service to be offered to prepaid subscribers,(discounts MTN to MTN) will encourage more calls during peak hours, thereby ensuring even distribution of calls and less chance of a dropped call. Dont have too much more on that ATM cause i deal with them contracts..

I check if you dial *135# there should be more info pertaining to this..

At the moment, my CB says "MTNZONE 65%"

Does that mean 65% of the network is utilized or 65% is being used?
I keep getting dropped calls on my cell, and it's iterating

It means you will get 65% discount on your MTN-MTN voice calls if you are on the MTN Zone prepaid price plan.

It is not directly linked to signal strength or cell usage/capacity.

I dont see any mention of these discount on the pricing on MTN's website, got anything official where this is confirmed?

It's funny how the Prepaid customers always gets all the benefits. Rewards programs etc....

And us Contract holders don't get anything in return. Maybe I should change my 5 MTNSP contracts to Prepaid when the 24month period is over.

Vastly more prepaid subs than there are contract.

I had that MTNZONE xx% cell info display over the weekend, and yesterday ... but now it's gone.

Doesn't worry me but it would be 'nice' if MTN could give trial users advance notice. But HEY! We're just customers!

Maybe you're on 3G now? Remember 3G doesn't have cellbroadcast.

Its definitely not on GSM and all cell broadcast messages are not working on any channels from yesterday.....

Nope - only time I change the "settings>phone>network>network mode" setting on my N95 is when I connect to internet (set to dual mode). I use the GSM setting at all other times.

I saw on the MTN Dealer Association site some MTN Zone presentation, which included the table of discounts. Right now I've got MTNZONE 95% on my phone which, according to the table, means I'd be able to call for 13c a minute.

That is an absolutely fantastic call rate, and one more reason to drop a Telkom landline phone. Come on MTN, lets see something like this for contract users! :D

(checked on the MTNDA site and it's gone now, they must have realised they slipped by putting it, and something on NokNok IM, on the front page and having it available to the plebs like myself)
