Four-year smartphone contracts in South Africa

South African mobile network operator MTN is considering offering its customers 48-month smartphone contracts and is currently assessing whether there is demand for such products.

MyBroadband asked MTN and Telkom if they had plans to launch four-year smartphone contracts after Vodacom launched them in September.

Even 12 months is too long to be tethered to a company. Rather just rock a cheap-ass phone that climb into bed with any company for this long. Madness.

Plus, as per many threads here from other users, myself included, once you are in bed with MTN it is very difficult to cancel. Their cancellation process is stuffed.

Haven't had a contract phone in at least 10 years. A 24 month contract was offensive enough.

Who in their right mind is taking a contract for 48 months?

We had this conversation last week. Search first noob.

What always fascinated me is that people would buy R15k+ laptops and PC's for cash, but for some reason a phone must be a contract.

Is that because of the additional Voice/Data value proposition?

What's also amusing is that every 48 month mumbo jumbo article I link the same Twitter/X/xHamster link + Drake meme & it continues to get likes  😁 :whistling:

Stop taking out contracts like 12 years ago. Buy phone cash and use a small contract or prepaid.
Not interested in a phone that is the price of small car.

It's like a status thing.

Prepaid phone contracts are perceived as being for people unemployed or having bad credit.

Oxymoron ;)

I actually think it's the other way around now, like, look at that baller, he bought an iPhone cash, yoh.

I wonder who will be jumping at idiotic ideas like this. Far better to just buy a cheaper phone cash and enjoy the benefits of increased disposable income. Forget the status symbol brigade, they already have untreated mental health issues. Who in their right mind signs a long term contract and pays a small fortune each month just so they can brag about their phone.

Who buys new cars? Same audience.

Keeping in mind that some can genuinely afford it.
