MTN considering 48-month contract

I'm in both camps, and have done both. cash and contract, alternating.

Latest phone is contract ("not 48 months!)

But the thing is, sometimes it's cheaper buying it on contract than cash. Why would you spend the cash then?

If I work out what I pay for the phone on the contract, it's was simply cheaper than buying it for cash. And I pay half that contract in 2025 Rands, so it becomes considerably cheaper.

Make it 72 months. Add it to the car loan.

Fark it, at this rate, they might as well. I terminated our contracts in 2020, and haven't looked back.

Haven't had a contract phone in at least 10 years. A 24 month contract was offensive enough.

Who in their right mind is taking a contract for 48 months?

Yes, I can't imagine 48-months. I guess if you want the latest iPhone, but can't afford 2k a month or whatever it would cost over 2 years.... quite mad, but who am I to judge?
