MTN constantly retrenching workers: union

“Apart from lowered job security, retrenchments also lead to lowered production, which in turn, may result in further retrenchments. Solidarity will, therefore, focus on the well-being of employees during retrenchment consultations with companies within the industry,” Croucamp said.

What? The point is that it will increase the production per employee, they are getting rid of the useless workers and thereby maxing their profits. I am amazed they haven't retrenched them years ago if it leads to more profit.

they are getting rid of the useless workers and thereby maxing their profits.

Not really true...a company can get rid of non-performers without resorting to retrenchment which is a costly, reputationally-damaging exercise. These cuts are being made to reduce salary costs because MTN need to offset some of the bad news that is coming out of other business units...stagnation of their expansion plans, increased competition \ costs locally etc.

Unions don't make a fuss when you fire someone who hasn't met agreed KPI's.

the sad thing is i know quiet a few guys who work at MTN and are really hard workers... always assisting immediately to resolve any issues... they have families and quiet a bit of responsibilities, the group decision to change how they manage their business is the cause for these retrenchments and frankly, its a *** decision...

lets put it this way... being realistic, in today's time, where are all the above middle aged white guys going to get jobs? with BEE and a flooded market for jobs, i feel really sorry for these chaps... good, decent guys trying to earn a living and cut short because group made the decision to sack them...
