Again? Sure ... makes for good media I guess. Reality differs.

Can I ask MTN who sent me a message? Nope, client privileged info. But I have to submit my personal info for them to look at. How can I enforce my righst against somebody I can't identify (CPA 2008, ECTA 2002, POPIA)?

Okay, lets try looking at who sent this:

Oh dear, we are respecting the privacy of the abuser or their agent. Nvm the unwashed consumers being targeted.

In the meantime, it is fraud. So report to the cops? Who was it? Dunno. Inspector X gets that faraway look wondering what will happen in the next episode of Generations, Keeping up with the Kardashians ...

MTN has also implemented the second phase of its Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) policy. The first phase was implemented in May 2018 and was designed to mitigate 60% of fraudulent subscriptions on the network.

“The second phase (Artificial Intelligence Fraud detection software) was implemented at the end of September 2018,” O’Sullivan said. “This is designed to mitigate up to 95% of the fraudulent subscriptions.”

How many years later? Why does it sound familiar?

How many of the victims are contacted by the scammers' snakeshit lawyers, threatening to ruin you in legal action, if you dare persist in your complaint? Raises hand and nods. (Told his and hers to f-off).

What passes as muster of subs? A record dated 4 days AFTER they first started. UA is wrong. IP for the home connection, not phone (no wifi). Add forgery to complaint. Thinks of Rocky Horror Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again ...

Great marketing though, MTN!

Surely any journalist worth even just a grain of salt with the same grain of integrity realised the title of this article is pure and simple click bait and thus fake news.

WASP services only benefit MTN and providers.
There is no benefit for customers.

ICASA's mandate is to regulate electronic communications (i.e. broadcasting and telecommunications) and postal services in the public interest.

In the public interest, WASP should just be made illegal by ICASA.

MTN cracks down on unauthorised WASP subscriptions

An MTN customer recently complained that they received an SMS from MTN which fraudulently subscribed them to a wireless applications service provider (WASP).

The MyBroadband reader said they received an SMS from MTN with the following text:
Is MTN cracking down on themselves?
Their MTN Gaming+ service has subscribed many users without double opt-in
