I received an sms from MTN offering 10gig for R10 that lasts 7 days. I presume its going to be time limited.
I've googled around looking for more information on this offer, but can't find any. Also I haven't come across another person who received this offer. The sim card that I received the sms on was a prepaid one that I picked up in the road and I ONLY use it in my 3G dongle. So please keep the warnings at bay about using other peoples sim cards etc.

I dont have the original sms anymore. I think it went something alongs the lines of a special offer (no mention was made about a limited time) that for R10 you get 10 gigs which needs to last you 1 week. If you use up the data in that week and want to purchase more within the 7 day period you get a msg saying: Yello! You can only load another 10 for 10 data bundle once the current bundle has expired.

Oh its true people. Have used it for the last 5 weeks. Its only for selected numbers though. *130*2# to see if you qualify.

hey i have a friend that has used this offer twice now, both times has worked perfectly.

I wonder how they choose?

I do wonder as well because MTN is not my primary network (I'm on prepaid and have all the major networks' sim cards, 5 in total, 2 from Cell C my main network). I just happened to be using the MTN sim a month and a half ago (they daily R10 gig from midnight to 6 am is what I use it for) and received the SMS( I would upload the screenshot but I can't seem to do it on a mobile).

My main network is Cell C. My MTN Sim is in an old Nokia phone that runs Symbian and uses EDGE. I only ever use the internet when I get the free 15MB for using R1. Maybe it's targeted at data hungry prepaid customers?

You might be right hey, because even though it's not my primary network I did buy that R10 midnight gig 26 times last year. I'd also love to know when it began because the SMS says 22 February 2013 which just doesn't seem plausible considering how many times I've used the sim and that on Twitter most people are only now hearing about it. Furthermore the SMS says that it ends March 31 2016 which proved to be wrong, heck the most recent SMS I got was on the 2nd of April and it still had 31 of March as the end date, go figure.

Suffice to say here by the airport in Pietermaritzburg it's MTN > Cell C for user experience.

I borrowed a friend's MTN SIM (edit: that he no longer uses, since I convinced him to join the dark side) and the USSD code worked on it. 10 bucks for 10 gigs that lasts a week...from MTN?? Amazing!
In case anyone is wondering, no you can't load concurrent 10GB bundles. Existing data must deplete first.

Just be prepared for some frustration if you use all the data. Managed to use the 10GB and when I tried loading another bundle it told me that only 1 may be loaded at a time. Checking data balance and it is locked at 10KB remaining - persists until the 7 days have passed. Tried contacting MTN to manually remove it and no luck after 3 days.

Best of luck to you. I have no idea how active the MTN rep is, or how efficiently they deal with queries on social media. Should that happen to me, I will simply remove the SIM from my Samsung, and insert one belonging to another network.

Thanks! They haven't been active for a few months - November judging from last profile activity. The social media team blamed it on active sessions reserving the data although the sim has been removed for a few days. Luckily I normally only use the SIM for the daily after hours bundles, so reverted back to Afrihost SIM :D
