MTN data bundle promotion - "Summer Internet giveback"

Lets do some analysis:

MTN: R30 = 150MB (promotional price) (limited time) (expires quickly) (not available to all)

Cell C: R30 = 200MB (regular price without promotions)

Conclusion: MTN can go get stuffed

In the terms and conditions on the MTN website, the operator lists the following exclusions:

My MTNChoice subscribers;
Smartphone Services subscribers;
BlackBerry subscribers; and
MTN Long Term Evolution (LTE) subscribers.

OK then, which MTN subscribers are actually lucky enough to be included in this giveback some of what has been stolen by MTN promotion?

MTN: R30 = 150MB (promotional price) (limited time) (expires quickly) (not available to all)

Cell C: R30 = 200MB (regular price without promotions)

Conclusion: MTN can go get stuffed

or

Afrihost (using MTN network): R29 for 250MB, month to month contract

or

MTN: R149 for 1.5GB (1GB + 500MB promo - expires within 7 days)
Afrihost (using MTN network): R145 for 3GB, month to month contract *

or

MTN: R245 for 3GB (2GB + 1GB promo - expires within 7 days)
Afrihost (using MTN network): R197 for 10GB, month to month contract **

Conclusion: AlmightyBender's conclusion is spot on.

I feel bad for MTN users. This doesn't deserve to be called a promotion.

This promotion would have been awesome end of 2010 throughout 2011, but the way the market is heading it is like MTN just doesn't get it or is completely out of touch.

Vodacom is in the same boat, not as much as MTN regarding data, but I looked through their Vodashop catalog yesterday and I couldn't find value anywhere. Lots of smoke and mirrors, like e.g. a R10 000 voucher to some school tutoring website.

I know people who know people in the industry and I have heard that Vodacom's marketing department is freaking out because it seems that people are wising up: Contract sales are very down.

At least my MTN used to work properly...changed to Cell C. Full HSDPA signal, no data throughput.

Guess you can see proof here

MTN definitely has a better network from my experience.

Since MTN is the only network with awesome LTE speeds in the small towns I guess MTN is the better network for smartphones.......

Anyways. I can confirm that if you have a 1GB recurring bundle added onto your existing contract you will also get the free data.

I activated a 1GB recurring on the MTN SP website on my Top Up 100 contract and I received the free data.

Just to compare here that its not a bad deal actually......

Cell C addon data bundle 1GB = R145 and NO LTE support so yeah speeds seems to vary a lot in high congested areas like mine.... The tower just serves toooooo many people.....

MTN addon data bundle 1GB = R145 but you get 500mb extra to use within 7days and yes it is consumed first even if you have other data bundles... MTN seems to do that right. :-)

Ohh and MTN LTE gives speeds of 25Mbps + so yeah data will go fast but atleast you can use the data... :)

To be fair I'm a big fan of Afrihost Mobile, and their MTN sim cards have worked flawlessly for me. But it's the Afrihost billing system and month-to-month nature of their mobile offering that make it really attractive. That's the thing these big service providers like Vodacom and MTN have forgotten. People want simplified billing, no contracts, easy cancellation and no nasty out-of-bundle surprise charges. It's taken some one like Afrihost to come along and offer all of that and do what none of the big guys could do, albeit with one of the big guys' network.

Unfortunately there are still plenty of gullible suckers out there willing to sign their lives away for 24 months, not realising there are other alternatives to signing a contract.

If you are buying such small bundles, it is highly doubtful you are downloading heavily each day, or even using much data each day. So the short expiry windows are really punitive. Why so stingy?

Another case of false value. The marketing campaign for this probably cost more than the data they are giving away.
