I have a USB modem which connects to MTN for internet access.

I don't use it very often; it's mostly for emergencies when I can't get online any other way and, as such, I generally load it with a 10 Meg data bundle (at a Rand per Meg!) which lasts 60 days.

It would appear that MTN, in an attempt to further shaft their users, have changed this so that it now becomes a subscription and MTN can now deduct the amount each month regardless of whether you use it or not.

This is a scam and I will not buy data from them on these terms.

For God's sake, surely 1 Rand per Meg is exploitative anyway, in view of other operator offering 19c per Gig?

Does anyone know the rate at which these thieves deduct from prepaid accounts without data bundle purchase?

The bundles always used to be subscriptions until about the middle of 2009 when the once-off bundles were introduced.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally purchase the subscription bundle instead of a once-off bundle this time?

No, I'm not sure that I didn't; I used the 141 dialup system but the only option I found was for the subscription service.

I did it several times but was unable to find the once-off option. Or rather, after purchasing the once-off option, the voice prompt informed me that I had purchased a subscription account which would be deducted at the end of the month. Clearly not what I want.

If you go big you pay less per meg, obviously.

Yes. But as I seldom use my full allocation of 10Meg, then I would be paying for the 100 Meg and using less than ten, the remainder of which would expire.

So in effect I would be paying more. A lot more.

you are completely aware that you joined a subscription service, how did mtn scam you?your title is misleading sir

i've had my phone a while & have never paid more than R5 for data & use the phone at least once a week on 3G for 10-30min. i do have pics turned off.

Of course it's a scam.

The voice prompt says "Purchase a ONCE-OFF Volume Bolt on Data bundle" That implies I am buying a ONCE OFF Data Bundle, not a subscription.

How can they possibly deduct a subscription from my account without it being a scam?

OMG R10 a month! This is crazy stuff! Maybe you need to get a lawyer!
