Hello

Currently I use iBurst with my laptop as a portable connectivity solution. This is fine when in Joburg, but outside urban areas I have no signal.

Therefore, I have been looking at one of the 3G/HSDPA data card solutions from MTN and Vodacom.

I would rather stay with MTN as my handset is on MTN as well.

1) If I was to buy a data card outright (not on contract) could I then just load it with a 1GB data bundle, and would the data usage roll over from month to month until I reloaded a data bundle?

2) Looking at the coverage maps of MTN and Vodacom, it seems MTN has wider coverage for 3G, is this true? (Difficult to tell from maps)

3) Is there HSDPA coverage in Woodmead and Midrand?

4) Would I be able to get HSDPA in Durban, Cape Town as well?

5) Internationally, I travel mostly to the UK, would I be able to roam on an appropriate network and pick up HSDPA?

Thanks in advance.

1) Your data won't roll over. You loose everything you don't use at the end of the month.
2) Wider coverage, maybe in Jo-burg are, I don't know. Vodacom has got better 3G/HSDPA coverage.
3) Can't help you with that.
4) Durban I don't know, but Cape Town, not at all. Coverage suck in Cape Town. Think they have one or two towers.
5) You would be able to roam but you need a 3G USIM. Don't let the people at the helpdesk or Service Centre tell you otherwise. If they tell you a normal sim will work, they will just add Datafast to your package, tell them NO!!!!! Because that won't do the job. You can only roam with a 3G USIM. If the sim doesn't say 3G, it's not.

Piesang maybe you can help me with this one -

How does data roaming work if one goes over to eg. Nambia ? As far as I know MTC (Namibia) only has roaming agreements with Vodacom for voice - not data
Namibia (MTC) self has only got gprs and limited Egde as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong). Coverage is also poor.

Tested Vodafone card in Nam and it don't work. Tried MTC sim in there and didn't work either. Technically it should've. Could be the apn name,...No idea what it is though. Will try their tech support.

Any ideas for pref. mobile or fixed broadband solutions in Nam would be much appreciated.

Good day,

A HSDPA card will cost you + - R2400 cash

The Data Bundles run from a month to month basis they bundle doesn't carry over.

2) Looking at the coverage maps of MTN and Vodacom, it seems MTN has wider coverage for 3G, is this true? (Difficult to tell from maps)

I would say Vodacom has a wider coverage for 3G

3) Is there HSDPA coverage in Woodmead and Midrand? Depends where about e.g. You would have to look at street level as well

4) Would I be able to get HSDPA in Durban, Cape Town as well? Depends where you are........

5) Internationally, I travel mostly to the UK, would I be able to roam on an appropriate network and pick up HSDPA? As far as I know we have started with GPRS roaming and 3G agreements so it depends on what network you're on I know we've got a 3G roaming agreement with O2 in the UK, so I assume that if they have HSDPA you might be able to make use of that will have to confirm with that.
