MTN Deal

Maybe, but CellC call quality sux!

Have to agree. I was with Vodacom recently and when my contract ended went to Cell C prepaid - data is often slow or doesn't work in HSDPA areas and signal quality is awful everywhere I go, I miss most of my calls because I have no signal on Edge or HSDPA (and I'm in central Randburg mostly, not an outlying area) - I guess you get what you pay for. Comparatively I was with MTN for 8 years before I joined Vodacom and I never had any major problems. I'll most likely sign up again with them once all the new Android flagships are available. Cheap data is worthless if you can't use it.

I have an S3, and Cell C is only good for me if I select WCDMA network only.

Doesn't seem like anything special. That Sony is gone though :(

I used to be an MTN customer because they were the best value if you wanted a phone. In many cases the monthly payments were the same airtime value that you received, so the phone felt completely free. For ages now though, the phones on the cheaper contracts are all crap. In fact I don't spot a good deal at any price. Apart from reception issues, I see no reason for anyone to stay with MTN.

If anyone's interested the blackberry 9900 on anytime 350 topup is going for R420 per month. On anytime 200 topup it's R320. Cheaper on topup than on an open line.

I'm due for an upgrade, but no clue what to get. MTN's offers aren't exactly awe-inspiring. Had a HTC Desire HD and SGS2 but feel like a change. Should I go for Lumia, or stick with Android (I still have an Android tablet to keep me happy)?

Are there any cool toys coming to MTN anytime soon that I should wait for rather than upgrading now?

If I were you. I'd say take the Z10.

Why would you force another 2 years of MTN on yourself?

Because I've been with VC on contract for a 2 year cycle and I they aren't better or worse IMO. I've got them on prepaid for my tab and where MTN doesn't have signal, VC usually has and vice versa.

Cell c may be better in terms of price but all I ever hear is how horrible the call quality is. Don't know if it's true, though.

At the end of the day I think they are all more or less the same.

PS: I've been with MTN since 2001

Wait a while, the Sony Xperia Z should be available by the end of the month and the HTC One will be available in April. If you can wait a little longer the Galaxy S4 should be out soon too. I think any of those will be amazing options.

Yeah, but I'm struggling to justify those phones while I already have a tablet that allows me access to the play store and everything else that android offers.

I'm a bit over the poor battery life of an android as well as the instability (to a degree). That said, I have no clue how stable WP8 or the new BB10 platform is.

Anyway, I just phoned MTN direct and got word that they have no stock on the Lumia 920, while the batch of 820's they had has been recalled by Nokia... sigh

Well if you just want to try something different then I would go for the Blackberry Z10 - BB10 seems more interesting than Windows Phone and from what I've seen has more features, particularly considering it's a new OS - not to mention the support in SA seems much better (music store, accessories, etc).

I agree that BB10 does seem very interesting, but alas... I got the 920. And I'm already liking it. Guess my mind was already set.

I went to two shops and both said they strongly advise against the Z10 due to the large number of returns because of software issues.

WP8 is incredibly fluid! Plus the weight of the phone means it doubles as a potential weapon. :p
