MTN explains caller ID problems

This is not entirely true.

In terms of outbound international transit, carriers can buy different classes of transit. A decent carrier should use GOLD routed with guaranteed CLI+Roaming on all destinations. The transit provider will charge more for this on many destinations.

In terms of inbound international to MTN (or any other SA mobile), there is a simple problem and that is that the cellular network's retail tariffs less service provider commission is below the cost of their wholesale interconnect rate. This creates a huge market for "grey routes" into the country where mini-operators will set up LCR banks and sell millions of minutes to SA Mobile at a rate that is lower than MTN charge themselves.

The simple solution to the latter is to ensure that your wholesale interconnect rate is always lower than your retail rates (less commissions).

MTN and Vodacom have avoided this problem for years because they make so much more money terminating calls originating off Telkom's network (at the inflated termination rate) than they lose on grey international routes. So they allow the problem to persist.

I wonder how soon these operators would've come forward and owned up for problems "they're aware of" had it not been published

I must say that its irritation when my brother phones me and it just says 'Unknown'.

But I must also add that when he phones me and the number showing on my screen starts with 074... I don't want to answer because the if I can hear him the quality is so bad that he usually tries again.

About 95% of the times he phones me no number is shown on the screen and the call is identified as Unknown. Its flippen irretating to say the least!

MTN are useless when it comes to making and receiving international calls. When I had guests from overseas use their phone here and made a call to me via roaming on MTN, or I made a call to them, there was a delay in the line. WHY? They are in the same country a few km's away, and it sounded like they were phoning me from the moon.
We soon switched them over to roam on Vodacom and never had any line issues again.
MTN need to wake up.

I think this is more just MTN... on CellC I have the worlds worst calls from the Philippines. Calls are almost always terminated early, there is never a CLi, and the quality of the call is like using Skype on a dial-up while downloading a 10TB movie.

This is mobile phone to mobile phone. Its made mobile calls to or from the philippines basically useless. Calls are even routed to the wrong number!!!! (This has freaked my gf out a lot). SMS`s dont go through about 50% of the time.

Since the mobile operators are screwing us, weve turned to skype.. where using the same mobile phones, we have a way higher quality of call.

Instead of spending their stashed cash on trying to get into bed with the Indians, why does MTN not rather use their resources to improve these 'known' issues? Or is this a reason for courting the Indians, do they perhaps have a cheaper answer?
